took my bike for a ride towards the end the front suspension felt choppy i looked at the fork stanchions and pushed them up and down and they where covered in oil residue as far as they went down into the forks ..few days ago they where fine is this normal to have both leak at once so suddenly i did change the brake lines a month or so ago and got some brake fluid over them wich i wiped off could this have stuffed them

The fork seals are usually about the same age. Old seals will fail, not uncommon for both sides to fail around the same time when the failure is age related. Change them.

^ What he said. Given that the seals leak, don't be surprised if you find that there isn't much oil in the forks. That will contribute to the ease of pushing the front end down, as will the lack of an air spring (the captured air in the forks supplements the steel spring; leaky seals = no air spring).
I'd recommend a full teardown and inspection, which you'll want to do before deciding on using the stock spring or buying a new set of springs.
I think I spy an xj750 Seca in your proile pic. Is that the one you're working on?
