Hi I bought a xj550 about 8 months ago it hadn't been used much in the previous 5 years. I've only now got it on the road and it is running rough between 4000-5500 revs, it is fitted with non standard cone type air filters would it be worth getting the carbs synced and going back to standard filters . Electricaly everything seems in good order and starts first time every time and idles about 1200 revs when warm. Thanks for any suggestions

Try to find a stock air box and air filter, it will be very very difficult to remedy this and other problems while running pod filters.
The cv carbs do not work correctly with pod filters . And the symptoms you have point to this!

+1 Agree 100% pods suck you will be pulling changing jets reinstalling....testing...pulling carbs changing jets ....repeat.....mean while those that have stock airbox and filter will be out riding ...lol seriously try to get a stock airbox you will be pleased you did in the end.
