86 XJ700 Maxim Bobber Build

    Hi there, So I'm a fair ways into my garage build, the few struggles I'm having are with the electrical. I want to clean it up and hide it better. Do you suggest rewiring entirely or using the original wiring harness?

    I'll be back on here to continually ask questions I'm sure as the project itself has gotten pretty overwhelming for a Shade Tree Mechanic like me.

    Here is a couple pics of my garage build "85 maxim 700" all started with a faulty petcock and a tight throttle cable, the more i took off , the further i went, Almost done, maybe a week of wrenching yet. I could not have finished this resto without the great info from this site. Final reveil pics coming soon !

    I'm working on an xj650 bobber too. are you going to do a hardtail or stay with shocks?

For mine i stayed with shocks on it. I bought some shocks off of a yamaha bolt which dropped my back end down 3 inches . I'm almost done mine but i had to send out my carbs to be rebuilt . Then it is just some small things left. Taking off some parts to polish up then it's finished . Cant wait to see more pics of your projects guys /.

    A three inch drop is too far. The u-joint will bind and tear itself up.

    Is a 3" drop too far in the rear if he drops the front 3" as well? Just curious, as it would seem to me if the front and back were lowered equally the u-joint wouldn't be in a bind anymore?

    The front drop has no relationship to the rear. It's the angle of the rear of the engine in relation to the rear swing arm. As the suspension in the rear compresses it will bind up the U-joint as the driveshaft is spinning.
    Not a good thing on a shaft drive bike.

    If you want you bike to be safe to ride and last a while, and not leave you stranded with a blown out joint, you could get away with an 1" shorter from stock shock. Nobody here would recommend going any shorter than that.

    Now if you had a chain drive...that would be a different story.

    Thank you for clearing that up Tony I was unsure of the front/rear relationship in regards to the angle of the u join. So how could you drop more and be safe I'm sure it would require more work than it's worth, but could you make new mounts to move the engine so the angle is within safe parameters?

    I would have to say it would be way more work than it's worth on a shaft drive bike.

    I would say that it's not as difficult as you'd think, but will probably require that some machining be done (and a bit of cash). First, find a CV joint that is sized for the location and horsepower.

She is finally all done and running strong, biggest challenges I had were carbs and charging issues. all resolved with" chacal, xj550H, K-moe,, and a lot of others !
