So I was happily riding my Seca up until a month or so ago when the speedometer suddenly quit.

After finally digging into it (0) I found it was the speedo gear. I ordered one off E-Bay and went to install it today only to find that the old speedo gear had seized up and broken one of the prongs (tines?) inside the wheel housing.

At this point I would guess I'm looking at another wheel but I'd be happy if someone had a suggestion. I don't suppose someone sells that part except Yamaha?

Can I use a wheel off of an XJ550? 750? My rubber is still good so I can get away with just a rim...

    Ideas guys?

I have a spare set, but it is still installed on a complete rim. I'll see if I can't slip it out without damaging anything.

So what's involved in replacing that little ring with the prongs? I didn't see a spring clip when I had it apart but I might have missed it.

I'll let you know when I dig into it. According to the parts breakdown, it is held in place behind a retainer and the seal. The retainer looks like nothing more than a spacer, let's hope it is. This means I have to pry out a seal, let's also hope I can do this without damaging it.

The wheel is notched to accept it in the right position. That's not any kind of high-tech part.

I imagine you could fabricate one from the appropriate sized sheet metal ... using the old one as a template.
Just getting the "Ears" the right size and angle to drive the lower speedo drive is the clincher.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find-out that ... that part is almost generic across a whole lot of models.

once you pop the seal out the ring with the ears to drive the speedo comes right out. There are two notches in the rim to hold it in the correct position and keep it spinning with the wheel.

So if I screw up the ring seal I'll need to get a new one then. Ok. Got it.

You might as well get a new one. That's a stamped-out part with no frills. Cant be much money.

The one you has was over twenty years old!

$3 for the "clutch" (drive plate with ears) on BikeBandit, about as much for the seal. I've got the drive "clutch", send me an addy if ya want it.

Oh hell I thought it was going to be expensive! :)

Keep yours so you've got a spare if you need it and I'll just get it off of BikeBandit if that's ok with you. I can't thank you enough for going to the trouble though! :)

Alrighty! New is good too. Get the new seal while your about it but don't order up any parts untill you've pulled the old assembly off and checked for any other damaged parts. You might need more than just the drive dog/plate/"clutch" and shipping is flat rate. Best of luck buddy. The part number that I found was #6: CLUTCH,METER 28375-001 @ 2.94 and #8: OIL SEAL,SDD-TYPE 358809-001 @ 6.86.

I've actually had it apart already to replace the seized speedo gear. (Which I found two more of in my garage this week _after_ I bought the other one. )

Anyway the bearings looked ok and the "tab" broke off cleanly so there wasn't anything in there grinding away at things. I've ordered the above parts and they should be here this week.

I'm going to hopefully be doing a lot of work on this bike over the winter so I'm not going to re-pack the bearings at this time even though it's a good idea...

Replaced the speedo "clutch", retaining ring, and seal as of last night and it all works great now! (Just in time for it to rain today...) Anyway thanks for the pointers! :)

I did notice that over the winter I'm going to be doing the front wheel bearings - complete but loose and slightly wobbly - a fact that I didn't initially notice. But those seem to be relatively inexpensive as well. It looks like it'll only cost me about $50 max to do the front bearings and seals...

Unless you're done riding for the season I'd suggest you do the bearing immediately. You really don't want that to fail on you.

They weren't all that loose but yes they will likely be done very soon here.

Any suggestions on what kind of grease to use in them? I happen to have some wheel bearing grease for marine trailers but I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not.

    high temp bearing grease.

The wheel bearing grease should be fine.
