building frankenbike ?

    I've come into possesion of an 82 maxim untitled frame. If I can figure out how to register it,
    ( in New mexico it's hard to register without a title) I'd like to build a bobber out of it with
    whatever parts I can find.There's a seca turbo set of forks and triple tree here on CL also, a
    final drive. Would they fit a maxim frame ?

    what kind of maxim frame (550 650 750 ect) is it shorty vin will ID it?
    tripple tree & forks can be made to fit with correct bearings in most cases just a matter of if it will hit gas tank.

    Before you buy ANYTHING..... Get a title for it. If you can't get it titled, you'd be throwing money away

    Register it in Vermont - they don't title bikes older than 15 years. You don't have to be a resident and you can do it by mail. Ride on that registration for a year, then turn it into your state to get a title there. Any state has to honor a valid registration from another state as proof of ownership. If your state requires titles, they'll issue one when you transfer the registration. It's completely legal and not shady. You might come across a registrar that isn't familiar with this tactic, but assure them they can look it up in the cross-state licensing reference book.

    How do you register it in Vermont if you don't live there? I also have an unregistered frame.

    Dave just asked me the same thing, so I'll be lazy and paste in what I told him here.

    In summary:
    1. Get bike with a bill of sale.
    2. Go to VT's website and print out form #TA-VD-119. Fill it out.
      • If you did not purchase the motorcycle from a dealer (if you purchased it from a private individual) you will also need a the Visual Verification of Serial Number form. Call your local PD to send over an officer to perform a visual verfication of VIN for you and sign the form.
    3. Gather your forms, a copy of the bill of sale, and write out a check for the fees plus tax. The 6% sales tax they collect can't be from a price lower than either the minimum allowed for a registrable vehicle ($500) or the NADA value. So in my case they wanted $30.30 tax and a $44 fee; $74.30 total. Mail it all in to VT.
    4. Wait.
    5. Notice on your checking account transactions that a check was cashed. Rejoice!
    6. Wait more.
    7. Receive a paper registration in the mail. Rejoice!
    8. Wait more still.
    9. Receive a license plate in the mail. Rejoice! Put it on and go ride! (You have insurance, right?)
    The titling phase is still theoretical for me, as I basically haven't touched the bike in a year, so it's not ridable yet and therefore not worth titling yet.
