    Hello,
I am the original owner of a 1980 XJ 650 Maxim. It only has 11,746 miles on it but It needs a new rear tire.
I did a quick search online and found about 95 choices! Is there some place on this forum that I can find feedback from other owners as to how to narrow down what to look for Brand, type, etc.

Other than the tires it is all original including the optional faring.
    Thanks,
    Dan

The Dunlop 404 is a good all around general purpose tire.
Avon and Continental are good long range touring tire.

I just ordered a set of Shinko 230's after reading a few different reviews. I'll be sure to report back after I get them on and a have a few rides on them.

    Another for the Dunlop 404's.

Dan, for what it's worth, there is a lot more rubber than just the rear tire, and chances are good it is old and dry rotted. Since you are the original owner, you should be aware of what condition critical parts are in. It sounds like she has been sitting along time. Safety and reliability should be the goal for you and your bike - ask questions if you need help with anything.

Stumplifter thank for the heads up. This XJ has been garaged since the day I bought it and it definitely does not just sit. I live in San Francisco and ride at least a few times per month year round. Mostly short runs but always good times. As a retired Mercedes mechanic I keep a close eye on my machines and am a big believer in PM. Sounds like the Dunlop 404 is a favorite , thanks for the recommendation.

Another to consider is Bridgestone Battle ax BT45. Good tires and they come in sizes that fit our bikes.

I just got a pirelli route 66 on the rear. First ride was lite to avoid skid, but it was quiet and smooth. Good reviews from what i read and good wet performance. We get surprise rains in CO, and sometimes hail and snow might join in, so I like to be prepared

And if you like white letter tires Bridgestone SE11 is also a good choice.
Today there many good tires out there just personal preference imho.
