    HI Guys,

Those of you who think I should sell it and buy a Kawasaki Vulcan 800-
    diseregard...:)

    Weeeel, the chopper bug bit...again

I own an '82 Maxim 750J...and have read through the mods forum
    and gotten some ideas...

1 Move the rear shocks back 3" - painterD did... and have a better
    seat made

2 Rake the front proportionally - involves cutting welding etc -
Expensive?? Does the motor need to be out? Would that involve
    extending the forks? Expensive?

3 Forward Controls - the $20 version in here sounds good to me

4 Remove the "Squares" guages, handlebars, headlights -
saw the post on the bars - it's good... my preference is the round
Virago setup for the guages...are my speedo and tach pickups elec
or mech.? Would these work? I'll find a nice round chrome headlight :)

I guess my big question is the wiring and the electronics...I go
unhooking all of it- not all at once - and later find out I needed
half of it to start or run the bike... that stand switch makes me nutz
    anyway.

This engine btw is real strong - like the bike- just want it a little
better...winter is coming so can't ride much longer anyway

Anyone care to put a $$ figure here?

    Thanx guys...

    Great forum we have here.

    Regards

    PY

    Hi Guys,

Forgot to mention the shorty exhaust pipes found in here...kept the link...

Annnnd ..a quick black paint job - my buddy is going to fill in the side covers so they are solid and paint them... I will supply the maxim decals and he will urethane them --- same for the tank...he owns a body shop so that part's covered...

Again... thanx for your time and attention

    Peace,

    PY

If you are the one going to be cutting, sectioning, raking and reinforcing the bike ... and, doing all the electrical and retrofitting ... the answer is in how much the parts you want are going to cost ... plus labor.

Now, people always say that the cost of their own labor is free. Sure, free to you! But, how much would it cost to have it done for someone who cant burn and weld.

I'd say ... all that with the accessories, mod's, custom work, prep, paint and refinishing:

    $4500~5 Grand. (80 Hrs X $50.00 @ Hr.) Reality = $70.00 Hr.

Under a grand, if you do it all yourself. Probably less. Possibly a lot less.

I'd guess around $500 or so. Do yourself a favor and don't try and rake the frame. Being a competent welder does not make you a capable to modify a frame like that. If you are dead set of raking the front end, find a fork on ebay with the amount of rake you want. Far less problems.

$42 grand for an XJ? I really don't know what to say. Something smells funny though.

That's like 42-Thousand Junior Whoppers. Holy Smokes!

If I had 42-Thousand Dollars to spend specifically on a new Motorcycle ... I think we'd be talkin' BMW 1150R with the Tour Package and the Electric Adjustable Windshield!

Not an XJ Chopper ... unless Jesse James and his boys ... or those Guys from Orange Country Choppers ...

I'd want a "Theme Bike" ... Sporty Touring,, not too loud, and painted like a Blue Angels Jet!

    HI Guys,

I agree with Rick - $42K is a bit much...then it wouldn't be an XJ and I wouldn't be chopping anything...

Not a welder so that's out and maybe longer forks would be better...thanx...I was figuring $800-1500 for parts - labor depending on ?? - mine is free- from a self-satisfaction standpoint. Farm out the pieces I can't do - paint will be cheap or free depending on what happens here - Getting it apart to work on wouldn't be the issue ...:)

My thing as previously inquired is the wiring/electronics... even if I bought a generic harness and re-did it... without "some" of the safety features. IF I just cut all the wiring from the "computer"and wired the new speedo/tach combo in - would it start/work? I need to look at the wiring diagram obviously, but not a bike mechanic so I wouldn't know much after either as I don't know what controls what.

    Just want it right...

    Thanx- Peace,

42 grand would buy 105 of my bike.

There is no bike anywhere worth that much to me. None. Zero. Zip. Nada.

If a brand new wiring harness came here in a box; I couldn't rewire a stock bike without a Color Coded wiring diagram.

I don't know too many people that could.
I'm sure it would lay-out close to the right way and some connections would look familiar.

Nut, there would be no way I'd get it right without a reference.
You are going to need SOME kind of reference ... even if its another bike!

Maybe I don't understand what it is you are rewiring. IS there a problem with the existing wiring? On my bike, I didn't change much wiring. Everything I unplugged is still sitting in the back of the headlight bucket waiting till winter when I find myself ambitious. I wired in a starter button and a switch for my headlight. I have no clue about electric. Just bought some wire and went at it. Conversely, kevineleven has hardwired everything on his bike. No harness persay. No relays, no safety features so he'd be a good resource if you want to go that route. Just takes some patience and a good schematic.

I can/did wire my bike with no harness, and could probably do it now without reference. MY bike, not YOUR bike. I wouldnt do what I did to mine to anyone else's bike... Keep in mind it's absolute barebones, no safety stuff, no high beams, horn, etc. Just ignition system, and head/tail lights/signals, neutral and oil light. Thats all. There's an ignition system diagram in my gallery if it'll help you. Lights are simple 12v.dc-- I learned that in junior high shop class.

Oh, and I have an old harness if you're looking for one to buy. No fuse box.

    HI Guys,

After your input, went & bounced this off a friend who did a bike long ago.

At this point, all I'm doing is lowering the back end, changing the guages bars and lights...then paint. The rest is too involved, although even these items may prove challenging.

    I appreciate your comments.

    Thanx,

    PY
