1982 750xj Maxim 27,xxx kms sat for last 4-5 years. I changed oil & filter, drained the old fuel and put in a new battery and fresh fuel, the bike started right up. Throttle was stuck shut, zero movement. I shut the bike off and was able to force the the throttle to move. Return was lethargic but the more I worked it the more it freed up. Fired the bike up again and applied throttle to see how bad it was hanging up. It responded to a few blips and died. Now it refuses to start. I then installed fresh plugs and confirmed spark. Still nothing. I suspect that I have entered the realm of gummed up carbs.

What should I expect/anticipate regarding parts? Is it likely I will need all new jets etc? Please advise.

    Update:

All the previous actions taken were performed yesterday. It would appear that it was flooded (the plugs were soaked when I changed them yesterday!) because today it fires up somewhat easily. Throttle response and return is improving. Still doesn't want to idle off of choke though.

Yes it sounds like you need to go to CHURCH. Jets shouldn't need to be replaced, XJ4Ever (click in the upper right corner) sells rebuild kits as your float needles and rubber bits are probably toast.

    Are you the original owner?
If no, then add checking rear brakes, front brake line date codes and valve clearances to your list.

Not the original owner no. I have spent a few solid hours reading the article you linked already. Thanks for your feedback.

Another item on your list is to check valve clearance, and adjust as needed IE you adjust by changing shim as required. Look at upper right corner click on xj4ever ...go to the overload hour ...lots og great info.

Once you are caught up with all that!
You can start with the front brake master cylinder, and caliper service/rebuild.
Followed by the steering head bearing check/adjust/replace.
Recovering from all this you can get cozy with the swing arm bearing adjust/replace.
and finish with the wheel bearing check/service/ replace.

I'll leave the electrical for your next partner in the dance!
Tell the better half it is a man thing and you need to make sure it is safe to take her for a long ride!
