Hi guys....it's me again....these time with a tricky problem...
I have to push the bike to start it. If I push the start buttom sometimes hear that click and nothing happens and sometimes seems I ran out of battery. Checked the battery and it measured 12.60v but does not turn the engine. It holds charge too and it charges while the bikes running... Still can't push that buttom and start the bike. My guess is something going on with the starter motor...what do you thing?

have you tried jumping across the solenoid with a washer, the 2 large nuts that wires connect to from the battery and starter?

. . . and cleaning the contacts in the starter button housing. Be careful, if memory serves me there is a small spring inside that will go flying if you are careless.

What bike do you have rod? A lot of these have safety systems to prevent starting in certain scenarios (i.e. starting in gear without pulling clutch) and is most likely the culprit. Min has a sticky sidestand switch that prevents me from starting time to time, I just get the click.

Try 550''s suggestion, if it starts when you jump the large terminals on the solenoid you can rule out the starter.

550 could walk me step by step. My tech english isn't good...thanks.
I cleaned regulary the start buttom and there is no failure on the safety systems. The bike is a xj700 1985...
I don't think the problem is in the start buttom i guess is something with the starter motor or selonoid but

May be the battery. 12+ volts on a meter doesn't mean it will give 12+ volts under load. Jump it with a car battery and if it starts get a new battery. If not then look for other issues.

you want to jump across the connection that the +wire connects to the solenoid to the wire that runs to the starter.
this will turn the starter over if key is on bike should start

solenoid is also called starter relay

Check the starter solenoid for continuity ( lot's of how-to examples on YT), and clear the contacts with wirebrush. You might need to check your battery as well - use a professional battery tester, most car shops have it and sometimes they do it for free ( it takes 3 min to do it).

How did you diagnose it? Check the (-) wire going to the starter, under a rubber cap. It should be bolted with a nut, under the wire you should have a few plastic/rubber spacers. If this doesn't help, you might need take off your starter motor and disassemble it. If you have a Service Manual for XJ550 there should be a testing procedure for shorts.

I took it apart several times...first started with a litlle escape of current and finally got a short. What I did when first discover the "escape" was use the multimeter in the highest scale of Omhs measuring the armature coil and got no continuity.
