THa'ts th wrong way to install them.
It's not lazy to use them if you're making large altitude changes often.

I just think he did it so he didn't have to rejet when he installed the pods.. lol
I have been doing some thinking, and research. I'm going to fab my own open element style air box.. Then ditch the pods, after reading this I don't want to run them anymore.

I just picked up an 82 Seca xj750. I'm putting it through many changes like getting rid of the Atari and square headlight, changing the seat and new paint also going to try the pods even after reading all the great advice on this forum. I ordered a rejet kit from 6 Sigma and am curious as to how that kit will help with the pod problems. If it doesn't then I'll put the air box back in and ride happily ever after but I want to try other options first. Guess I'm hard headed but nothing ventured nothing gained. I'll post results when I get it going again. It's in a bunch of pieces now with cleaning, painting and fabrication in progress. Thank you guys for your great insight and knowledge.

did you order the kit to go with pods and 4 to 1 exhaust .
they may tell you to drill the carbs but do not do that because you can not un drill the holes

The kit I ordered is for pod air filters and with everything else stock on the bike. I just ordered it today so I have not received it yet to know for sure what their instructions are for installation and drilling or no drilling. I'll keep that in mind when I get the kit.

Just wanted to give an update.

I got my bike running smoothly through out the power band with pods. Yes with pods. The setup i have is:

    Exhaust:
4 to 2 three inch slash cut harler mufflers that were shortned with cut and unpacked baffles.

    Intake:
Uni pods with a custom aluminum insert to slow down the air. The insert has slots cut into it, to allow air flow.

    Carb:
    Main 125 jet
    Pilot 45

Float fuel line at 2mm instead 3mm. I did not drill the plunger or use shims. What i did was adjust the pod insert by cutting different sizes and then colortuned and rode. A lot of trial and error. The insert works for my bike. It acts as an air restrictor and smoothes out the air. Do i have documentation of air flow or a dyno? No... did i race a stock xj650 to compare? No... did i run over a unicorn and use its blood to make my pods work? Maybe...

FYI i cut up 4 soda cans to create the inserts. I can post pictures tomorrow of the insert. For now enjoy this beauty.

Also i went through quite a few spark plugs from running rich with trial and error.

As promised here are photos of the inserts. The image's are self explanatory, but if you have questions I'll try my best to answer. After i get my new stator i'll post video and images of the plugs.

Lol, close to that. For the first trial run, used budlight. Then went to soda when the beer ran out.

amusing. you go to a free flowing pod filter just to restrict its flow. great idea on the insert . you should post it in the pods thread
