Thanks to xHondaHack, I now have a new ignition/gas cap/helmet & seat lock combo!!!

I took apart the new gas cap first, but I ran into problems so I jumped right into getting the ignition installed, and it went very smooth.. I want to take the tumbler out of the one I got from xHondaHack and put it on the original one, but I cant get it out... any help would be appreciated, here are some pics of the ignition install -- the first pic is where I got stuck with the lock cylinder in the gas cap. Thanks Again, Tony!!! You just helped me prove that this is the best XJ forum on the planet!!! Yamaha for LIFE!!!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Under the tiny oring there is a small locking tab that holds the lock cylinder in place

I drilled it out and broke two drillbits trying to get the old lock cylinder out. The key that they jammed in there is keeping the last loeb of the tumbler plates (correct terminology?) in place. I tried to drill out the key as well, but to no avail.. I just put the one you sent me on there for now, just been super busy at school -- Ive been welding 30+ hours every week.. I still havent been able to put the kick-stand spring on, so I just took it off and use the Jack stand.. The other day on my way to class my clutch cable snapped when I shifted into 5th gear getting on to the freeway!! I had to pull over and figure out what happened, then push start it so I didnt need the clutch to start out, and jam it into gear all the way home.. Ill post pics of the lock cylinder on the old gas cap in the morning, sorry I haven't been too active on the boards just been welding at school like crazy.. Everyone else in class is there to go into the field as someone's employee but I want to build custom YAMAHA bobbers, truck bumpers & flatbeds, etc.. haha

Hate to break it to you, but the guys that want to go be somone eles's employee are going to make more $ their first year than you likely will in your first five. Having tried the being-my-own-boss thing, you had better plan on taking a job, and doing the bike building on the side until you can build a reputation for yourself. Custom work is darned risky, and you only make money when people know who you are, and are able to trust you; those relationships take time to develop. Don't give up your goal, just be smart about reaching it.

Best thing to do now is get a new gas cap from Chacal @ xj4ever.com and then swap over the lock cylinder from the one I sent. That way you have all the locks working off the one key.

Glad to see you're working toward a skilled trade. The world could use more talented welders 'cause that's one thing I'm not.
