    Hi.

I am trying trying to resurrect my bike. quick background, I brought this bike to my mechanic for routine maintenance, but ended up them breaking some bolts in the cylinder, and basically got it back in pieces after that (so I got no pictures of how it looks like before it was disassembled).

long story short, and after a few years of it sitting in the garage left as is, decided to put it back together this past few weeks.

Now, I think I have it all assembled together and have put gas in the tank, opened the petcock to PRI (prime), I see gas leaking in the exhaust and the overflow, any ideas? (no leaks on the ON position)

is this normal at prime or is this a carb issue?

(Carb was bought from eBay taken from an XJ650 Seca, and mine is an xj650 maxim, sample checked a carb and looked ok [float comes up and down ok, and all diaphragms come down fine], so I did not open all of it)

I have not started it yet though, just got the new battery and still need to charge it.

I am not a mechanic and this is my first time messing with an engine. Any opinion is really appreciate.

    Thanks....

Carb issue. The float nedles are not sealing. The float needles meter fuel flow into the float bowls. You will need to service the carbs, change the oil, and not atempt to start the bike until the fuel ovrflow problem is fixed.

That is what I am afraid of. I guess back to work...

I just put in new oil before the filling the tank, do i need to replace it still (apologize for my ignorance)?

    Thank you...

Remove the oil cap. Have a sniff.
99% chance of gas being in the oil when the carbs overflow.

That makes sense. Ok. Thanks for the info. Will definitely check that.

Be aware that if the petcock is a bit leaky, but slow enough you don't. See it.....you can STILL have a gas leaking through and into the oil. So, make sure that the floats AND the petcock are in top sealing condition.

^^Agreed, but only if the float needles aren't sealing, or if the petcock vacuum diaphram has a hole in it.
