    Hey Guys and Gals,

This is my first post and hoping to find some help with my '83 Midnight Maxim. I love the bike and plan on refurbishing this off season. (Hard to ride in Chicago Dec - Feb).

My little cruiser has started a chirpping sound. It is not all the time. It happens mostly when I start it. But it also happens after it has been running. It does NOT get worse if I rev the engine. It sounds like it is going around and around (if that makes sense)...Like something spinning is hitting it every so often.

Like I said it does not do it all the time but when it does it is prominent.

If anyone could offer a possible fix, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Be safe out there.

Welcome Mark! Did you happen to note whereabouts on the engine this sound is eminating from? Top end, transmission, final drive? I have a funny sound like the one you describe that sounds like a knock when my bike idles too low. I wonder if this is the same issue.

    Most likely a Knock

I learnt the hard way when i kept on running it & when went into fix it, found the 4th cyl bearings on top of each other, It actually had Spun.

Ok I rode it just a bit last Friday. It does speed up when I accelerate. I can not really tell where it is coming from. Somtimes it seems out of the primary cover, other times out of the engine compartment.

Ok so if it is a knock what is the fix? I was planing on tearing the bike down this winter anyway but I wanted to wait until out Toys for Tots run first week of December. If I have to do it now I will.

So any tips. I am not a mechanic by anymeans but I am mechanically inclined and can get around things with some intstruction and guidance. I do have the manual for the bike as well.

Knock is way different than a chirp.

Knock is something with too much clearance banging (crank against rod bearing or rod itself).

Chirp is something rubbing - or a vacuum leak.

Get yourself a piece of fuel line about 4 feet long. Hold one end to your ear - probe with the other end. Find the noise. Make sure to listen to all 4 intake manifolds and the fuel valve.
