Start with 2 sizes up. Then see if that works for you. If not, throw different sizes in, depending on how it is running.

It took me about 5 months and a bunch of jets to get mine running well with pods. I was able to find the right mix of air and fuel jets and adjustments that work well for my 81. It will be a lot of trial and error. That is for certain.

I highly suggest staying with the stock intake system. And I do warn you of the headaches that will follow if you do decide on pod filters. But it can be done.

Look for a drastic decrease in fuel milage when you do.

You should have #40 pilot jets and #110 mains.
They should be stamped on each jet.
You are going to have to up your pilots as well as the mains.
If it were me I think I would have 3" tubes on the carbs and then the pods.
This way you will have a velocity stack to direct the air a bit before it goes into the carbs. Some have the tubes a little longer up inside the pods to create a better look vs having the pods stick out further. It's all an experiment to see what will work.
Most who go down this road experience flat spot at part throttle and lean conditions own the high end while being semi rich at low rpm.
The stock air box contains the intake pulses and creates a slight restriction that works well with these carbs. To really tune this situation you should need to weld a bung in each exhaust header and install wide band o2 sensors and have the time and patience to get it all to work with the proper equipment to record what is going on at certain load and driving conditions. Ultimately fuel injection would be the answer if we could come up with a reasonable setup to purchase and install.
A while back a member SQLGUY made his own and from what I understand it worked pretty good.
Good Luck with your pods. Record everything so you have a good baseline to work off of.

    Answer:
I'd rather have a bike that runs, no headaches, and better fuel milage than pods and a sense of adventure. Where is your sense of common? Er, I mean common sense?

Robert, you are free to do as you wish, and that is a beautiful aspect of America.
please doNOT destroy your airbox when you remove it. (You can most likely sell an intact airbox for big bucks).

Seriously, not trying to be too big of a jerk - I admit that pods on a motorcycle really do look neat, but these XJ's were designed with a lot of thought on their performance before their looks, these XJ's really do perform best with their stock design features in place.

Does the bike currently run and is the gas mileage decent?
Use that as your baseline to compare it to how cool it looks after you put the pods on.

Hey, Robert, I know it has been a while but I was wondering if you ever put the pods on and how'd it work out for you if you did? Oh, and what is the number 12 stand for? Nice bike. Love the seat. Jack

you will spend valuable riding time trying to get it to where pods will run decent.
you want to get the bike running properly in the stock configuration before you even think about pods.

there are a few threads on this this thread addresses changing slide needles as well as jets to do pods
