Took my 85 maxim x out for a ride today after finding a loose plug was part of my idling problem. The bike obviously ran great.

I find out that I have no turnsignals, none. I troubleshoot it and find that my turnsignal relay under the tank went south. I did troubleshoot the turnsignal switch and the wiring in the headlight bucket.

I got that all straight and she won't start. Now mind you I just got done a ride no less than an hour before. I have NO spark! I cannot think of what I have done that would've done this. I did replace the turnsignal relay with one off a xj700 of the same year. All numbers match up. Anyone with any hints PLEASE come forward.

Did you try cursing at it? No really, I'd check your ignition fuse below the gauge cluster, behind the indicator lights.

oh, I cursed. I just pulled the wiring harness and the stator wire was fused to the harness. I think I found the issue...

    Typical damage from:
    bad alternator brushes,
    corrosion on the connections/fuses

I swapped out the wiring harness and I have an ignition 10A fuse blowing on contact. I've got a stator rectifier and cdi on the way. I just have to figure out why my fuse is blowing.

for anyone curious...did some troubleshooting last night with a bud I met on the boards here who has turned into a good friend. I kept blowing an ignition fuse. We checked continuity and a few other things (stator is dead, registering at .7 ohm vs .46). The starter switch wouldn't fire the starter...starter tested fine. We unplugged everything, then put the ignition fuse back in...one thing at a time until we got to the tci...it blew the fuse immediately. Good thing I have a tci, rectifier and a stator on it's way from an x...

ohm out the harness to make sure it isn't the short, but most likely the tci is corroded and shorting power to ground. I'll take the old TCI off your hands if you don't want it.

I had a similar problem on my X after messing about with the TCI and wiring blocks. Same fuse kept blowing every time I turned the ignition switch - no starter.

It turns out that I had plugged the smaller connector that should go into the TCI into one of the relays by mistake and the relay one into the TCI. They are the same size and fit.

I only noticed this error when I compared it to another X.

It might be worth a quick check to make sure you haven't got them reversed.

Makes me wonder if the wires being hooked up wrong didn't take out the cdi?

I blew at least six fuses before I found the problem and my TCI survived OK.

No, the bike was running fine before this happened. I had put about 300 miles on it or more before I had issues. I took a look at the wiring schematic and was like, 'there's not red and white going to the cdi!' Hopefully I get my parts soon...I am using the time to remove all the old clearcoat from the backrest, forks and grab handles and polishing them to a semi shine...
