I had "straighter" handlebars on my 650 when I got it and didn't need different cables to put the original hangers back on. I do not suppose you would need shorter cables for any reason save astetics. Good luck.

if you place your controls closer but use the same length cables the only think different will be excess slack of cable, but it wont change the operation. On a bicycle its easier to see, the housing just takes a longer loop to the end destination.

The cables all re-route with very little work. What you will find, however, is that the maxim controls and the seca controls are subtly different - the mirror mounts on the seca are flat whereas on the maxim they are angled. The angle is to compensate for the bars angle.

What will happen with flat bars and the maxim controls is that the mirrors will tip inwards making it very difficult to adjust your mirrors to a position you can see anything -- I'm switching to seca controls this spring to fix this problem.

Going by his original post, he has a Seca, so going from Seca bars to straight bars wouldn't be much of a difference at all.

BTW, are you selling the Seca bars?? :D

Me? god no - I've kept the maxim bars in the event I sold the bike - but I'm using the seca bars and will finally get around to installing the seca controls this spring.

Ah - there goes my reading comprehension on the first post.

    Should be fine then...

What year/model was that Seca? Did it have the master cylinder on the right control like my Maxim does? As you know I have the same problem with my mirrors as you do . I need more info so I can find the proper controls.

Currently I have my stock maxim controls on the bars. When I brought my bars (from an xjlister I think?) they came with the seca controls.

The seca controls do not have a remote resevoir. I thought they were from a 750 but I think we discussed this and said they must have come from a 650 as the 750's was remote?

I have pictures of the seca ones somewhere.

SnoSherriff, I now have a surplus Seca Turbo master cylinder I could let you have gratis, which has the 90 degree mirror mount. It could use a rebuild. It was for the dual disc setup on my turbo, but I swapped it out for the Parts N More master cylinder built for the XS1100 to get a bigger piston. If you want it, it's yours, you just pay the shipping.

The Parts N more unit was just $76 US, so it was a good upgrade.

I have a 750 jx Seca and I just replaced the handle bars with a piece of black coated round tube...cut to a 28.5" length....It fits TIGHT, but the controls all seem to work just fine.... the only problem comes from the choke level...at full turn to the left, the level hits the tank an sometimes slightly opens....you just have to be aware of it....the straight bar looks good on mine, and it cost about 5 bucks at a metal shop....

    Cheers,
    Tyler

Just replaced stock xj bars with medium apes from a previous bike. Better positioning for shoulders, wrists, lower back (as I'm 6' 270lbs). Switching was easy, after I fab'd up a set of 2 1/2" risers

I attempted straight bars on my 81 maxim 650 made from hardware store 1/8th inch wall tubing and my controls fit but i could see nothing out of my mirrors except for my elbow. Needless to say dont go to a hardware store. I took my motorcycle test with the bars on it and in the emergency stop they kinda took a crap and bent. Thankfully not enough for the tester to notice but I have bikemaster drag bars on it now but the choke lever housing knicks my gastank when I lock the bars left.

hey fellas this is my first post on the forum, but ive looking at the site now for a couple months. i just put "more straight" handlebars on my 83 xj750r seca, and had no problem. Though as said by Joel07, the only problems it creats is maybe an extra 2 inches of brake and clutch cables hile maintaining full function in both/
