    Hi all,
Hoping this forum will help me out with woeful example of an xj650 ive just bought. It looked fantastic until I investigated and it seems the little fella needs some work!
Riding it home, the back brake pretty much caught fire and the idle would rev to detonation proportions - so today i've got the carbs off for cleaning and weighing up that it needs a re-wire as its a fire waiting to happen! Also ordered up some brake shoes for the back.
Any tips on the re-wire - ive looked at the ultima wiring kits - does it include the wiring to the regulator / rectifier etc?
I also own a Buell xb9sx which is his stable mate ;-)

Welcome aboard. 650Seca? It's been heavily moded. Imo you should start with sorting the things it'll need to some what correctly idle (the pods on cv carbs will prevent a good idle). Get the valves clearance in spec and do a compression test. Open the oil filler cap and see if the oil smells of fuel. If so, put the battery on a tender and don't start/run the bike until the issue has been sorted.

    welcome to the camp!

Look at it this way - the Buell will get you from here to there until you lovingly resurrect your new XJ. Ask for help here, you will get it - there are a bunch of electrically minded folks here that should be able to help with your harness question(s).

Thanks for the responses already - it does run, starts up lovely and idles a dream until you ride and give it any throttle - after riding coming down the gears etc the idle races, ive read it could be air leaks etc ?

Roc.... Remember, the other side of the ocean only got that style.....we call it the 650rj Seca, to differentiate from out 650 Maxim. They got the 'Seca' style as their standard xj650.

Yawning cat--welcome! Take your time and read through the information overload hour, and the info on shim clearances, you're already on top of the brake issue.... Which is good.

The high idle could be from a number of things, but most likely is a vacuum leak at the either the carb-to-manifold boots (gasket against the intake), or the throttle-shaft seals on the carbs. It's common especially at this age, and especially if the bike has been sitting a long time. These dry out and cause air leaks.

Late chiming in, but I thought I'd mention that we got the Seca 900 too, perhaps more than youseguyz got, due to your protectionist tariffs on bikes over 700 cc. Also got 750x! Zoom!

And oddly enough Canada also saw the XJ700 in 85/86.
This bike looks to have an 18" front from an XS400 but with dual discs.
    Forks I'm guessing are XJ/FJ600.
