Removing carbs XJ750

    I'm restoring a 81 750RH and having trouble getting the carbs out. Ive unhooked everything but cant seem to find any room to get the air filter boots off.

    I can see that the most popular technique is sliding the air box back but I can't see much room to do that on this bike.

    Any suggestions?

    There is plenty of room. Unbolt the air box to slide it back. Push the airbox boots into the airbox as you remove them from each carb.

    With tank removed look at rear where tank mounts there is a 10mm bolt remove it and a bolt at the side cover plate and airbox slides back. Use a 2x2 or a 1/2" wooden dowl rod and gently pry the carbs....resist temptation to use a prybar or long screw driver...you can mar surface or damage carbs.

    Pretty much none that will work well.
    There is a thread around here somewhere though.....

    My 99.9% success story with pod filters

    In the end, an airbox is preferable from a rideability standpoint.

    K-moe said it best. Thumbing through the multiple threads concerning interest in pod filters always seems to come to the same conclusion; they are far more hassle than they are worth. I apologize for not referencing any specifics as I am currently at work but believe me they are a headache. As much as I would love to go with the pod filters, as they are incredibly slick in terms of styling for nearly any bike, I would avoid them for any XJs as it will be an incredible task to not only achieve fully synchronized carburetors, but to maintain the sync is next to impossible.

    Stick with an airbox....avoid pods you will be rejetting and pulling carbs numerous times. Forget riding in the rain . The engineers knew more than any of us on how to get the best all around performance out of these bikes. If you really want to do it try to save the airbox....you will possibly end up putting it back in.

    Ahh gutted, I was definitely doing it purely for aesthetic reasons. Has anyone come across another airbox/method that simplifies the look of the air filter that doesn't compromise performance?

    Nice, did you notice any negative performance issues?

    I was also thinking some like this? But havn't found too much info on it yet... will keep hunting. Has anyone seen or tried anything similar to the pics?
