As I am new to the forum, I'm sure this issue has been tackled at some point. my 81 XJ650J runs, starts, and may even ride soon. my issue is that it will not idle at all. The guy I bought it from said the intake boots on the engine side of the carbs were starting to crack and needed replaced. I looked and obviously he was right. But could it really be that simple? I am also getting fuel and oil inside the air filter chamber. Where/what am I missing? Or am I just over thinking this.
Side note: same issue with my 82 XJ650J . ..

    check your cylinder compresstion
gas in airbox is carbs leaking. oil in airbox could be from gas leaking into the oil
(giving you a high oil level) from carbs or blow by from cylinders rings

Sounds like carbs need to go to "church of clean" as well. Bikes left sitting with old gas for longer the 6 months get afflicted with the green monster, small jets and fuel circuits get clogged up.

Doing that currently on the 82. I guess the 81 will be next. Thanks!

Bike nerd point: both bikes cannot be xj650j. The last j is the year code. Either it's an 81 or it's a j. J stands for 82. Carry on!

As I have researched enough for the 82, my phone auto-fills at will. Not important to the current query.

I know that guy and I am not calling him a liar but I do know he will say whatever needs to be said to get the bike off his hands and your money in his pocket.

Not important to the current query, and as long as only the original poster reads it, we will only reply to that end. What's that- others will read this and gather incorrect information? Oh, in that case, some bike nerd should step in to provide the correct info.
