    That's "patina." It's supposed to add value (eventually...if you're a nutter).

    So similar to a 750 and yet so different... I've been staring at it for like 10 minutes. How rare are they? I think I want one... Nice find, Dave!

    Nice bike! I nearly bought one of them back in the day - it made my '79 XS400 look pretty primitive. But then I found my 650 Seca and the rest is history.

    I almost bought one in 1984 when I bought my '83 XJ550K Maxim instead. No regrets however.

    Ooo ooo ooooo!!

    I accepted a trade that I just couldn't refuse......

    Traded a 900rk ( no, not the trophy winner) for these:

    image.jpeg image.jpeg

    So now there's a couple more Xj700X's in the stable :). Both run, one is one the road, the other is road-able, just got do some maintenance stuff first.

    Surprised that you gave up an RK, but for 2 X's, I guess it makes sense. And what of the gold Datsun in the background? Is that yours too? More jealous of your collection than ever. Don't forget to update the bike list in your signature!

    Not mine....those pics were taken at another location.

    I still have my trophy 900, another one I'm building, and a third one which is simply a frame and matching # engine......so it's ok--still have 3 :). The one I traded will be a beauty again, and it only had 14k mi on it!!! We both got the great , even trade. I"m looking forward to seeing it .......

    i used to have a couple Z's, but sold them. (regular 300zx, and an AE 300zx clone that I was building). But, it was time to let them go......

    Took one of the MaximX's for a spin yesterday .......crawled out onto the road-----hammered the throttle....redline in first gear, quick shift, hammered it again....redline in second gear, wound out third gear..........was doing over 60 in about 3 seconds or so........before I even hit 3rd gear. Not quite as fast as the 900rk, but close enough!!!!!cant wait to see what it does one even I get it dialed in :) was hoping to take the other out, but the weather didn't cooperate today.

    Why does Dave have to get ALL the 700 tall sissy bars?

    It's like THEY find YOU!

    And I love that 400 BTW. Really digging that rear mono shock... You know, the one you can't see in the picture. Cool!

    Hi Hogfiddles,

    In regard to your xs400rj (seca), the (seca) bit has confused me because I only associated that with the XJ650 in the USA ie the RJ. Do you call the XS400 a seca because it is an RJ or is that a more widely used term? Your XS400 is a nice bike.

    I had heard that an XJ400 was produced for Japan before the XJ650s were exported but not seen one. Do you guys have them there?

    What you're showing is an xJ400 Seca......that is a inline-4 cylinder bike. It was a Japanese market bike, that is almost identical to our xj550 Seca, but with a 400 engine in it. To complicate it even more some of the xs400's were a single cam engine, and other xs400's were dual cam engines.

    The xS400 is a twin cyl bike.

    they made the:

    xs400 special - 2 cyl
    Xs400 Seca - 2 cyl
    Xs400 Maxim - 2 cyl
    Xj400 Maxim - 4 cyl

    It's called a Seca because that is the model of the bike.

    XS = 2cyl
    400 = engine size
    R = Seca
    J = 1982

    IF I understand correctly, it was only a two-year bike, and was only available here, for one year.........

    Okay. Thanks. With all the imports we get now, I've still not seen an XJ400. It looks a nice bike.

    I bought my first XJ650 in March 1981 and have since had an XJ750 and currently still have an XJ650. When sold new, we didn't have Maxims in most of Australia however I suspect some were sold new in Perth, 4,000 kms west. I think they might have dropped them off on the way to South Africa. So we didn't have the terms Seca or Maxim until the internet brought us this site. Nor did we refer to R and whatever Maxims are. Specials were XS models, specifically the 650, 750 and 1100 and I guess that is the same.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

    XS = 2 cylinder, except when XS = 3 cylinder, but none of those are 400cc machines.

    Well....there was also the:

    Xs650 - 2cyl
    Xj650 - 4 cyl
    Xs750 - 3 cyl
    Xj750 - 4 cyl
    Xs850 - 3 cyl
    Xs1100 - 4 cyl
    Xj1100 - 4 cyl

    Ya. Yamaha was never very consistent about mating engine type to the model type. Heck, even the frame style isn't much of a clue.

    Typo but I'm sure you meant XS850 - 3 cyl.

    We also had an XS750 special which was a twin. Basically an XS650. But we didn't get the XJ700.

    If you look at the history of XS bikes I think it referred to XS weight like my xsesive 1100 was like a battleship.
    My 72XS 650 was 65 lbs heavier than a buddies triumph Bonny and so on.

    78 XS1100E official Yamaha colour was
    "Macho Maroon" I laughed my ass off but still bought one April 78. Often correcting people it's not just maroon it's Macho Maroon and I'll smoke your 1000 Kwacker or Slowzuki any day!
