Here she is so far, still have to bench sync the carbs. Next is hard tailing it and waiting for parts as they come.

I take it you don't like the route I'm taking?

Pods, hardtail. There are better candidates for that route.
Have you ever ridden a hardtail?

No, but I don't plan on going on long rides, I don't have much time for anything but a few hours in the garage a night to build it. Maybe just enjoy it locally for a couple hours or so when I can.

Get it running well in stock condition. That will take less time, and give you a better running machine.
Make a pair of struts and go for a ride. If you like that better than having a suspension, then find a nice Suzuki to cut up.
Turning a bike that was built for long trips into a bar hopper is just....wrong.
If you want a machine that stands out, making a hardtail bobber is not the way to go anymore. Dime a dozen.

replace your shocks with steel struts to see if you still want a hardtail after a few rides

You gonna keep that luggage rack?
Wonder if'n anyone knows if that rack will fit an XJ650 Maxim?

I might be interested in the fairing and its mounting bracket--

I recommend holding onto the air box. You may find yourself wanting to reinstall it in the future. Pods are known to be troublesome.

Nope, I don't see why it wouldn't fit, or maybe just a different bracket..

Welcome aboard the XJ club. My advice to you is build the bike that you want. There are purist that like these bikes the way they came from the factory and there are others who like to customize them and there isn't anything wrong with either point of view. I'm more of the customizing type but also admire stock but I'd never knock anyone for their preference. This site is full of great knowledge and plenty of advice. I wish you well in your journey with your xj.

Thanks, it won't be original, I'm not a fan of that look. I'm not going to chop the rare or anything until it's running well and I've ridden it stock
