Do you have any suggestions i was reading up on it, it doesn't seem like I can put any exhaust system on the xj650j without modification of the carbs. The original exhaust is rusted at the collector.

Those ARE the suggestions. You have a 650 maxim. ANY 650 Maxim from 1980-1984 will interchange.

Yes, I said 1984. No, it is not a typo-- the 650 Maxim was available in 1984 outside of the USA.

The 650 Maxim did not have a collector box Per-say..... The left two pipes were connected to a 2/1 receiver that was part of a single muffler/receiver. Same for the right side. There was a cross-over pipe with a slip joint as part of each side, that joined under the engine.

Now, if you actually HAVE a collector box, then you actually have a 650Rj.... THAT collector IS unique to the 650rj.....

I didn't, and my bike runs fine. I've seen a recommendation to go up a size in jets, but I just went ahead with the factory sizes.
