Rubber Parts

Howdy one and all. This poll is to get a rough idea of how in demand a brake caliper pin boot is. This boot is used on 550, 650 turbos, 750 Seca and 1100. If yours are a melted puddle of goo like mine, good luck finding NOS as Yamaha isn't making parts past 20 years any longer (according to the service manager at the local bike shop). I am currently in touch with a company that can produce the boots, but there is a minimum run that they will do and I'm curious to know if there is sufficient demand for this part to break even on costs to have them made. If you think you need them, let us know. If you think you might need them, let us know. If you require multiples beyond one machine, please let us know by posting. I'll run this poll for 30 days so sing out. For clearity, there are 4 boots to a caliper (I'll call this one set), with a total of 8 boots per bike. Thank you for your participation.

 

yay!! First to vote! Can't you vote in your own thread??

Couple things:

1) 550 single caliper only has two of these rubber boots on it.

2) Buy the minimum and sell them to all who have said they want them. What you can do is see if a retailer, such as oldbikebarn, or even chacal, will buy the rest and stock them as a part for continual sale on their website. usually you can convince an old vintage bike parts dealer to take them off your hands.

One last thing, post a link to this thread for those that follow the posts in the parts thread...that will direct them here.

find out what the minimum buy would be. find out the bottom line on the minimum count PLUS set-up and all other associated costs...

if they are reasonable i would buy additional sets to help with this...

Ok gang, here is the much anticipated reply, hold on to your socks!

"We have put together a cost estimate for the Brake Boot per the latest design info you provided last week.
If the boot has ongoing contact with brake fluid, we would recommend an EPDM material. If not, we would
recommend a chloroprene material. If you decide you want to pursue our offer, we should get a sample of
your boot to test the material being used currently.

The cost to build a mold will be $4000-$4200. It will take 8 weeks from time an order is made and down
payment received until you receive First Article samples. Production parts will cost $4.10 each with a minimum
order size of 1000. The leadtime for production parts is generally 8 weeks."

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm no millionaire, this is way out of the ball park for my budget. It works out to $8.30 a pop which is not terrible but the initial run is just over $8000 for 1000. Any takers? I'm limited to a $400 budget. It's a start but I think this may well be a dead issue. Let's hear from you.

Have you tried Brian at BDesigns? I think this stuff is right up his alley and likely to be cheaper than 8k all in.

Fraps, I'll see what they have to say. It'll be a week or so, I'm very busy this week.
Lt. Sorry, the initial costs would have to be born out in the price of the part. $8.30 a whack is a very good price but who can shell out the cost for such an inventory? Another issue is demand. We're not exactly set up to broadcast our inventory to the very market we would need to reach. If we're hurting here in the states, I know our bretheren on the other continents are hurting too. I'm certain that the need is there, I just can't justify mortgaging the house and sitting on that much inventory for however long it takes to break even. I'm going to research other avenues, like modifiying other parts that are available. Of course there is the possibility of simply setting up shop and starting a business of my own in this. Not sure I'm in a position to do that just yet (still don't have enough in the bank to secure my retirement). We'll have to wait and see.

Parts are getting harder and harder to come by.
I dont even know if I need them but I would get a set "just in case"

These guys need to get their s%$t together and make some aftermarket parts.
There is still a demand, but no one is willing to stock them, mainly due to cost reasons.
Truely a shame, Im still looking for OEM mufflers(GOOD LUCK)
