85 xj 700 maxim cylider miss fire

    got new plugs coil seems fine,carbs need work,not sure how to fix,car just broke and have to sell bike if i can't fix!

    Please help me save my bike thanks

    If you are not mechanically inclined you are going to have problem How many miles? Was it running when you got it. Is it stock? you are going to at least verify the valves and clean and adjust the carbs. Tell us what's going on right now.

    Hello Thanks for getting back to me! I suppose i should of given more info sorry,i fixed my car by the way,so bike is safe,i am a little mechanically inclined,lol,so i got an 85 xj700 maxim and it wasn't running ,owner said carb cleaning and adjustment,not sure about miles,title says 9999999,lol i know right! It's my first bike ,got it cheap and wanted to learn how to fix,i knew to expect the unexpected for the learning process,anyway took off carbs cleaned them,used a needle to sync the butterfly's,floats all good ,very clean and decent carbs ,got new battery and started right up,ran high idle ,got hot and kept bogging out,then fixed idle screw and then it had mind of its own,low and high idle,took it out a few ,kept cutting out,can smell gas,so i know there is more research for me to do for the carbs,second pipe in from left was just warm,s0 i got new plugs and cylinder is not firing ,my computer started working a little better,so now i can research,everything keeps breaking,lol i was in construction for some time so thats what i like to do is learn build and fix,some times break accidentally and fix again,lol,so any advice you can share would be helpful,next month i can bring it in to a trusty bike mechanic,i can afford 1 hr,but rather be stubborn and have the satisfaction of fixing it with my own two hands,Thanks again

    Welcome , by researching posts on the forum you should be able to do most work yourself , take your time, ask lots of questions, remember you are the best mechanic because you did the work. There should be a check list valve clearance check, carbs rebuilt /cleaned , synched , brakes/hoses , tires, battery get running and enjoy riding . Just a few random thoughts. Good luck

    If you can't do the work yourself, sell it. Finding someone who knows how to work on it will be hard. and very expensive. But if you have any mechanical ability, and patience, these guys can get you running well.

    Just my opinion here. Don't sell it and don't take it elsewhere. If I can work on these bikes, anybody can work on them. Patience will help reduce both stress and cost of fixing things that wouldn't have been an issue if you took your time. Personally, I don't even think mechanical ability is necessary. It will develop over time, through the experience you gain from each project. You will also gain more confidence as you start with simple tasks and work your way towards more complex issues. No one starts out being a mechanical wizard, although it does come easier to some. You can do this.

    Welcome aboard. Good news...This is a bike specific forum for your model. A compression test will tell you the status of the engine and help you decide whether to continue with the build. With decent compression it can be rebuilt. The fuel smell is a stuck or sticking carb bowl fuel float valve(s). If the carb rack is not absolutely spot on your bike will never run at its full potential. Open the oil filler cap and take a whiff. Smell like gas? Yeah, gas is getting past the floats and filling the crankcase. Don't start it until the oil has been changed. We're here to help.

    Take the money you would spend on a mechanic and put it towards parts or tools, win-win!

    oh a couple spark plugs was wet with gas,that doesn't seem normal,need to buy compression and sync tools instead of mechanic

    Get a Haynes instead. There is a download thread around here somewhere. Also pick up the Yamaha FSM; no one manual covers everything throrougly.

    Hello All,
    Apologies, I am newbie to forums period and happy to get my feet wet in this one.
    I recently bought an 86 XJ 700s and I am so stoked on the idea of riding again.
    It has been sitting for quite some time (98 insp. sticker) after much you tubing and googling I have managed
    to solve some crippling issues except this one;
    After cleaning the carbs she wants to idle around 5k
    (with full choke), she screeched up to 9k with a slight twist of the throttle(still full choke)
    which I gotta say, sounded AWESOME!! followed by a backfire.. not what was what I was looking for and man where
    my dogs surprised!
    Anyhoo,
    I've adjusted the main idle screw but to no avail..
    Any idea?

    Check for air leaks. Use a propane torch, unlit of course, or starter fluid and spray around the intakes and carbs at idle. If the rpm increases you have an air leak. Mine turned out to be a torn intake manifold gasket. Also, if the carbs are not sync'ed you can have the same problem. Did you do a proper bench sync before installing the carbs? Finally, you will probably get more responses if you start a new thread rather than use this one.

    adjust idle knob , it is below carbs between #2 & #3 carb...

    I highly recommend putting your question in a separate thread. That will do a couple things. First, it will get noticed easier. Second, you can put additional information in the thread about your bike, so folks know what has and hasn't been done on it. Welcome to the forum, by the way. This is a great group of people with a lot of knowledge.
