I haven't been hanging around the forum in years, but I love this site and community! It has really helped me over the years with my bike - 81' 550 Maxim. I bought the XJ-CD many years ago - do they still sell those? Probably the XJ-flash drive now :0). Unfortunately she (the bike) has not been very active over the last 4 years either, started maybe every 4-6 months. She is difficult to start (needs starter fluid and lots of cranking) and also has a strong acceleration hesitation between 2000-3500 RPMs. Would really like to get her running proper. I have cleaned and synced the carbs several times, but I am sure I have missed something. I think it is time to call in the pro (hogfiddles) - Dave.

Dave, I tried to "Start a conversation with you" thru this forum, but it would not let me send the message due to some very picky spam filter misfiring. I am really hoping you still offer your carb repair/cleaning service. Please respond or PM me somehow thru this site that I am not aware of how to do.

    Thanks,

    Curt

it soumds like the enrichment circuit needs some cleaning . check the wells in the carbs for blockage as well as the brass rod that goes into the well that could be plugged too.

you may want to look at the asperator tubes under the main jet the little holes may be plugged in that tube

the www. xjcd, org site still exisits but does recomend this site for active advice

I understand the enrichment circuit certainly contributes to hard starting....I have tried to clean that in the past....even got the tiny drill bit....I'll give it another shot when it warms up (North KY).
My bigger issue is the acceleration hesitation between 2000-3500 RPMs - any specific areas to look fot that would cause that? Thanks!

That 2-3000 is transition from pilot to needle jet and probably emulsion tube is dirty. This will cause the bike to fall flat on its face.

    +1^^

that would be related to the main jet and the asperator tube (emulsion tube)under it. could also be the slides sticking or maybe a hole inone or more of the diaphrams.
of course that would be dependant on it being a carb issue.
the rpm range you mention is where the main jets start working

That RPM range is also very susceptable to vacuum leaks too. Have you checked for leaks while running by spraying the intakes etc. with starting fluid?

How thoroughly? Complete teardown, soak, & rebuild complete with new o-rings and shaft seals?

Also, related to your starting issues... what is the health/age of your battery? Just because it cranks the engine, doesn't mean it has the juice for the necessary initial spark.
