    Hello all,

My name is Nick and I live in Phoenix. I recently picked up what I believe to be an 81 XJ650 Seca. At-least that is what I am told. I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me identify it. The vin sticker is rubbed off, so it isn't much help, and there is a stamping on the frame of 5V2-003975. The bike was abandoned, so I'll be applying for an abandoned title here in AZ. Hence the reason for my asking for help on identifying it.

My plan for this bike is to have it ready to go for the distinguished Gentleman Ride in September of this year. Im thinking a Cafe Racer or Street Tracker look.

    Thanks in advance!!

thank you dkavanagh! that would also back up the 12/81 build date, which i would think is the next model year up. Thanks for the link. I found a few things on the googles, but I couldnt make heads or tails of them.

I started tear down of it yesterday, and it needs lots of work. The air box is cracked up pretty bad and pretty much unusable, tach and cable are both done for as well as the speedo and cable. It looks to have been painted several times already as the paint is chipping like crazy. The brake calipers that are on it have the wrong brackets for the forks, plenty of broken electrical connectors and cut wires that have only been twisted together. The light/horn/choke, and starter /kill switch are junk, and there wasn't any oil in it at all, except for a little bit that came out of the filter, but there is tons of old stuff all over the front and bottom of the engine. I'm not planning on chopping or cutting really at this point, more like just getting into a running and presentable condition. I'm going to create a build thread for it as well.

air box is an obsolete part at the dealership good news is that airbox off of bikes listed below will fit

This Yamaha 4H7-14401-00-00 AIR CLNR CASE ASY is used on these models and components:

    1980 XJ650 - XJ650G INTAKE
    1981 XJ650 - XJ650H INTAKE
    1981 XJ650LH INTAKE
    1982 XJ650J INTAKE
    1982 XJ650RJ INTAKE
1983 XJ650K INTAKE all the controls

before you go wild on your build with parts light/horn/choke, and starter /kill switch can be refurbished.

examine the motor first by doing a compression test and checking the valve clearances.

chacal has all the gaskets you will need to fix the oil leaks. He also sells the connectors and contacts wire.

Thanks xj550h. I tried getting it to crank over before taking stuff apart but something isn't working there. I pulled the carbs already as well. I'm going to see if I can bypass some stuff and see if I can just get it to crank for now. With the starter/kill switch being done for, I'm going to need to get around all the wiring. I'm also not sure of whether the igniter I got with it is any good. What I'm going to try and do is bypass everything but the starter and see if I can just get it too just crank for now.

Rare, as in one-year-only in the U.S. and not many still around. With a full restoration you'll likely get every penny back and then some if you hold on to it for 5 years.

Toomanybikes - I honestly don't even have a full list of everything I need yet. I'll PM you privately though.

k-moe - Thanks! I am finding that out the more research I do on it. Look it over tonight, I found that the VIN on the motor also matches the VIN on the frame, so an all original one no less. Although it has definitely not had a nice life so far.

I'd lik to add that I've read motorcycle magazine columnists who write about what bike that they wish they'd never sold, and the XJ650 Seca is often mentioned.

Ive had a few myself, but mostly newer ones. I really like the way it sits, and have a picture in my head of how I want it to look. I was really looking for a project and it looks like I have definitely got one on my hands. For right now this is the only street bike I have, and I'm planning on learning everything I can about it and having lots of fun.

This is the new build thread that I created for the Seca http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/nschultz-1982-xj650rj-seca-build-restore-thread.109295/

you can jump across the 2 solinoid bolts to turn the motor over.
I would suggest taking the crank cover off the left side and using a wrench to turn the crank counter clockwise. I would also remove the spark plugs and pout a little marvel mystery oil into each cylinder ans let it soak for a few days about an ounce would do.

be carful not to hit the pickups when you do this

Thanks! I found a how-to on this site actually that went into some good detail. Also started a new specific build thread for it. I put the compression numbers in there.

Quite a few 650 Seca's in Vancouver but many are being ridden and very few for sale and even a rough one goes for good money. Same as house prices, overvalued
