Sorry, hadn't seen this post here. I'm sure there'll be some guys here soon that are more knowledgeable than me. I don't know a ton about the 700, but with the older air heads you release the chain tensioner on the rear of the head, make sure the engine is at TDC, remove the camshaft sprocket bolts, move the sprockets to the side, take out the center guide, undo the camshaft caps and then get them out. You should have something like wire, or a screw driver to hold the chain from falling into the abyss. You can just break the chain, but if you're taking the head off anyway, there isn't a need. It is also highly recommended to have a manual for procedures like this. There are some important details you don't want to miss when doing the timing.

If you need to replace the chain; it's endless, and will have to be broken. Chacal sells a chain breaker/riveter, as well as new chains. Mastr link cam chains are available, but not preferred.

You asked in another post "How do I undo the chain to get to the head gasket?"

The service manual is a good place to start along with asking questions here. You may also want to share why you need to get to the head gasket. If you are new to working on these bikes it may be you are headed down the wrong path.
