i have an 82 xj750 maxim. I took the head and jug off to fix an oil leak. When I got it apart I notice that some head studs had a plastic cover on the studs and it was all broken up and basicly not reusable and some of the studs were rusted some. My question is are the plastic cover needed and should I replace all the studs. The bike has only 25,000 on it.

i think the all crumble, i painted mine with bbq black. you could grease them and put shrink tube over them.
you have to make the call if their bad enough to replace

I did not replace mine. They were meant to help reduce noise from vibration (i think). I did not notice more noise without them.

Personally I'd clean the studs up an inspect them first. Surface rust is not a reason to replace them. If there is pitting then you'll need new ones.
