New guy here with his first bike, a 1985 XJ700 Maxim.

I'm in North Carolina right off 95. You guys might be stuck with me for a while.

Welcome aboard. Stay as long as you like! :)
Strongly suggested, take a MSF course and read the Information Overload Hour.

I took the course. Well worth every penny I spent on it. There was a guy that had been riding for 30 years that was in my class, he picked up new information as well. I have started on Information Overload, but I'm at work (Shhh, don't tell the boss!) so hitting it as I can.

Welcome to the XJ forums, James. There's a lot of knowledge here.

I wish I had taken a course when I first started riding in 1985. I had just bought my XJ550. Went to take the exam after having ridden a whole 20 minutes...fortunately back then South Dakota was a little too liberal in their licensing test rides. After driving through some cones and almost dropping the bike once, the lady said "You passed...barely." I think she gave me credit since I was in may late 20's with a perfect auto driving record. I also had driven a stick shift all my life, so the manual tranny was not a real issue for me.

I learned some things along the way that a course would have helped me with up front. Fortunately in my "learning" I did not get hurt or hurt anyone else.

I had not heard of this before, but after some googling, I will be making that $4 purchase on Amazon

Everybody blame Lightsc1776 for the 7000 stupid questions I will ask. (I am a bit of a smartass, if a statement of mind could offend, then I was probably joking) Thanks for the welcome, I will try to be a sponge for the knowledge.

It really is a good read - I like how he explains not just "How to" but "Why".

I'm used to being blamed ... grin! I just tell people it proves I'm doing something, if only providing entertainment. Ha ha.
