I'm buying my first project / bike. Its a xj650. But the guy selling it got it from an auction he said and so it doesn't have a key. Does anyone know how to get a new key made for it? Is this normal?

It's unusual, but not that unusual. Make sure that he has a title in his name, or can provide paperwork from the auction house that you can follow up on to make sure it is his to sell. Lots of stolen bikes have no keys with them and it sucks when the original owner or an insurance company wants their property back.

The key code is on the underside of the ignition switch, and a regular old-school locksmith can make keys for you from the code.

He doesn't have the title and I'm unsure of the auction paperwork. I would ask him but my phone decided to go full retard on me last night and I had to do a factory reset so I lost everything. Hopefully he messages me or calls me today because he's supposed to deliver the bike tomorrow. This is the bike.

If the seller cannot provide proof of ownership, or is unwilling to pay for a VIN check at the sheriff's office, then it's a parts bike. Many states allow older machines to be titled on a notarized bill of sale with a VIN check.

Is the VIN the number engraved on the side? Or the piece of paper on the other side? The engraved numbers looks good but this is a 1981 xj. The paper is a little worn down and hard to read

The VIN is in three places. That sticker, stamped into the opposite side of the steering neck, and stamped into the clutch cover on the engine. The sticker is supplemental, but should match the number on the frame. The number stamped into the frame would be what it was titled with (in most states at that time) and the number on the engine should match the frame number if the engine is original to the bike.

I always wanted to carry two keys instead of only carrying one.
Now if the ignition switch were bad....

So I'm putting the carbs back on and the boots that go on the air box don't seem to be reaching the carbs. Are my carbs too far into the front boots??

They can't go too far in , but air box boots may be pushed back into air box or airbox is pulled back and it sides in upper bracket and needs to come forward or they have shrunk a lot

I've slid the box towards the carbs already and the tops of the boots reach but the bottoms of the middle boots have a little gap. Just a small gap.

Check to see if the airbox front is concaved. If so warm it up with the hot air gun so you can get it back out flat. Also, clamp the boots on to the carbs first, then push the other end into the airbox holes

Ah! A light just went on. When I removed my carbs, I pushed the boots into the airbox (not all the way, but enough to retract them). It never occurred to me to take them entirely out of the airbox to get them on the carbs, then seat them in the airbox after. I had my daughter getting her hand into the airbox to push the boots forward for #3 and #4! Next time...

Another trick… While you grease the manifold Boots,do not grease the airbox boots on the carburetor end..... Degrease that side so you have a dry fit. the friction Will help the clamps hold

you should see a mark under the clamping area on the boots, that's the top

It seems that 2 of the boots for the air box are a little short? Which kind of bums me out because if when I push the air box forward they still don't fit.. I'm not too sure on what to do other than buy new ones. Which sucks because theyre a little expensive for just some rubber haha

That's exactly why I said to check to see if the air boxes flat across the front. Often, they belly and then some of the boots don't reach

Yes, rubbing alcohol or cheap Vodka. Oil of wintergreen is sold at most pharmacies and through Amazon.

I'd use the rubbing alcohol.... The cheap vodka would better for soaking other stuff in

So ive got the carbs on and also a new battery. Ive got some kinda life from it? Haha. The lights come on. But no spark to the plugs yet. Still working on that. But I do have a question. My blinkers.. They come on when I hit the switch. But they don't blink. They just stay on. Would that be a bad relay?

I believe it could either be that or it could be that you don't have the correct wattage for the relay. I took the cover off my relay and cleaned it and my blinkers worked on one side, then I had to replace a bulb socket to get the other side to blink. Good luck.
