    Poxdravljeni Andy,
A word of caution with letting your imagination run wild.
My understanding is that the front fender of a 650 is more than cosmetic; it actually proveds additional stability (safety) to the front forks.

    Welcome to the camp

I'm going to say that I don't think you have what you think you have. It's clearly a Yamaha, but the steering neck is not from any XJ that I am familliar with. The steering and ingition locks are integrated, not seperate as yours has.

Im no expert, but it looks to me like the steering neck has been modified / replaced. The welds dont look factory.

I think thats original becouse i see on net that xj have one seperate steering lock and one with ignition my was have too one with ingnition but i take it away.you can look in haynes too you will see on photo that is on that lock.
If you ask me the welds are factory or somebody weld it very very well and center it every thing realy good,i see a lot of mixture of frames and steering necks welded .

In that case Yamaha did something very different for the the XJ650 they sent to your country than they did to the XJ650 they sent everywhere else. I wonder what else is different.

I looked up that part number.
    http://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/partsearch/yamaha_motorcycle
    It's not an XJ650 part.

Here's what would help us help you, and satisfy our mutual curiosity.
What are the first three characters of the VIN that's on the frame?
I'd also like to see if they match what's on the engine number plate. If they don't match, could you post both up for us?
I think you might have an XJ1100 frame, with an XJ650 engine.

Usually you have to have the correct key inserted, turn the opposite way, pull the whole assembly out

Interesting to see that on your bike.... welds all look original..I'll have to look at my 650rj again, but I only recall seeing that kind of lock on my non-yammy bikes

It is weird to see that lock on that bike.

    Country: Europe

    MODEL NAME: XJ650
    STREET NAME: 1983 XJ650
    MODEL ID CODE: 27G
    FRAME ID: 4K0
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 200101
NOTE: styling and features the same as North American XJ650RJ Seca model, has dual front disc brakes and an oil cooler.

So it is what you think it is, and the lock does appear to have been used on the European market xj650. Learning things is fun.

    1. Loosen the air box retaining bolts so it can slide forward again.

    2. Use a heat gun soften the front of the air box and make sure it is flat or even Bellied out a bit. If it's sunken in, you'll have a hard time.

    3. Make sure you've pulled the air box boots out far enough so the air box holes are in the grooves of the boots...

If you still have difficulty, get the boots as close as you can, then show us a pic----we'll see if there's anything else that we might notice
