I just bought a '82 xj650 and I saw the inside of the current gas tank is rusted, and it sounds like some metal is clanking around the inside? Is there anyway to save this tank? Or am I better off buying one from a xj750 for $159.99 off eBay?

You should be able to get the rust out (there are chemicals that will eat it) and some nuts and alot of tumbling should clean it up alot. Also a friend of mine had good luck with tank liner after the rust was removed. He used a brand called Red Kote. Hope this helps

The clunking may be from the petcock inlet screen having seperated from the petcock.

If I had the funds I would buy a tank. People would get out of your way if you bought a tank. Even a small tankette, you could double park where ever you wanted . . .

    Oh, gas tank . . . . Never mind.

I have three spare tanks for my XJ 900f because they rust through on the back where the front side panel grommet is located. Think I will use POR15 to seal my current tank.
