I have these two project bikes that I have not been able to do anything with. Perhaps you can use them for parts or make them into working machines again. I have far more parts for the 850 than the 650 (tank and triple not shown).

They are free to a good home.

Hmmm... I didn't get an alert for that. And there doesn't seem to be a way to delete messages from my Inbox any more.

I'm not on this site as much as I was at one time. How do you delete messages? The software changes for this site don't seem to be much of an improvement.

"Leave conversation" doesn't sound like "delete message" to me. Are they still in the system and I can't see them? Or are they really gone?

They are gone for you, but not the other people in the conversation. The point is, leaving a conversation allows you to join another once you reach the cap for open conversations.

Or you can delete the conversation and not accept future messages from the deleted conversation.....

While it may not s even like much improvement, there actually is a LOT of improvement. You just haven't been on long enough to work with the new system. You're still 'stuck on the old system". Weeeelllll.........we've moved on. This is what we've got, we've all learned to adapt to it.

I'm sorry, but it sounds fishy to me. A message in my inbox shouldn't exist anywhere else. Deleting that message should *delete* it, which doesn't affect anyone else's inbox. That's how e-mail works. I fail to see how not deleting messages in my own inbox when I want them deleted is better.

It all sounds more like the messages aren't really deleted, and they call it "leave conversation" because they're not deleted, so they can't say they're deleted. And since they aren't deleted, they're still in the system someplace. So basically, you can't ever make a message go away. Goodbye to even the pretense of privacy, I guess.

"Stuck on the old system" is a dodge to avoid the fact that I can't delete a private message from my inbox. That's a terrible "improvement."

The messages go away when all participants leave the conversation. This is nothing different from how deleting your e-mail does not delete the copies that reside on the recipiants computer. Even if all parties of an e-mail exchange delete the messages, copies still reside on the mail servers (until they are eventually overwritten), and on backups of those servers.

    Nope--not fishy. A Fact.
Nope ---not a dodge. An observation

Privacy-- nothing put out to any computer is really private anymore. People like to kid themselves about things being private. Riiiight---- just ask Julian Assange about that.......

Nonsense. That's just an excuse to not take care of things or be lazy and make things worse. How hard could it possibly be to allow me to delete a message in my own Inbox? Julian Assange has nothing to do with that. Whether or not "I just like" the old system also has nothing to do with that. Those are excuses to dodge the real issue, which is the fact that I should be able to delete a private message. Every messaging system *ever* has allowed this.

Rhys, I feel like you're not getting the basic thing here. If you e-mail someone and delete their reply, it doesn't mean it's gone. The sender still has a copy if they chose to. They can still send your original message back to you. It's really the same here from what I can tell. I've been in software industry for over 25 years and don't think this is something fishy.

The part that is fishy is this.

With a normal messaging system, I have a message in my Inbox. If I delete that message, it is gone. That's why the button says "Delete."

But this system doesn't say "Delete." It says "Leave Conversation," which leads me to believe that the message is not deleted. It's just marked somewhere as "invisible" to me, but still accessible to, say, the sysadmins. Meaning intentionally and trivially.

It's a subtle thing. Sysadmins always have access to the entire system, and with Exchange as the example, even "permanently deleted" items can be retrieved from the "dumpster" for a short time. But after that, (or if the user clears the dumpster), those messages are *gone*. Irretrievable.

I don't get the idea that this system deletes anything.

there are two ways to leave the conversation one is to leave with no more conversation allowed or further conversation allowed
with further conversation allowed, if the other person in the conversation wants to start it up again. the conversation will continue again with no loss of information.
it works the same as an email.
send email it stays on the server in cyberspace.its in your sent box even though you sent it.
when you delete your sent email the recipient can still reply to you even though you deleted it any one who has a copy of it can always reply to you.

I don't know if you are intentionally not hearing what I'm saying or what.

In any messaging system, if I delete a message from my Inbox, that message is *gone*. The copy in someone else's inbox may still be there, but the one on my e-mail server, the one where my account is, is *gone*.

Let me put it in the form of a question: If I send you a message on this forum, and you do not reply, and you just select that message and click "Leave Conversation," is that message gone? Or is it still on the server?

No reply, I see. I guess that answers my question. You can't delete messages in your own inbox on this forum. Creepy. Invasive. Unacceptable.

I've worked in IT for 25 years and I've never heard of this being a good idea. Only a bad one, morally, ethically, and legally. (Messagess you store are discoverable.)

I've also been a member on this forum for over ten years. I haven't been as active as some others, but I can't continue to use a system that doesn't have any respect for its users, even more so when even the users dodge the real question and refuse to answer a simple thing.

Farewell, everybody. It was fun while it lasted. I probably can't delete my account, either. But I won't be using it any more.

rhys, forum systems are designed to organize and retain communications. I'm not sure why it surprises you that it is doing exactly that.

    Delete, leave, etc.... = Potato/potaahhto

ANYTHING that is put online is ALWAYS there. It's just that MOST people can't find it once you Deleted it.......well--once YOU THINK that YOU actually DELETED it. It makes you feel better believing you deleted it. How often do we see that people are caught because of emails/etc.....they deleted? Most EVERYBODY knows that once it's out there, it's ALWAYS out there.......except the ignorant, or those unwilling to accept that.

Holy Crap----- I'm turning into Neo...........

I can delete you, if you wish------

Because private messages are supposed to be exactly that, and the inability to delete a private message - even in a forum like this - is a new development that I cannot abide.

I'm sorry, but there are so many things wrong with that mentality.

Firstly, it is patently false. There are very few messaging systems that do not allow you to delete your messages. The fact that people often don't is a separate issue. You may notice that even the FBI could not retrieve messages deleted from Hillary Clinton's private e-mail server. Once deleted, those messages were *gone*. Every other forum, public and private, that I use permits this.

Since the users *and* admins here are apparently so firmly in the "nothing is private" camp, yes, I think it would be best if you deleted my account.

My Inbox was not full at a paltry 36 messages when I first signed up here. Why there needs to be a 10-message limit is beyond me. You can say what you want about privacy, but who can tell me that with storage as cheap as it is, the space limit is so low?

Tangent: XJBikes doesn't use HTTPS. At all. Your user name and password are transmitted in the clear, and Congress has just further weakened protections against people listening to those conversations. You had better not use the password you use here on any other site. That's a classic mistake, and this site is apparently the weakest link.

How... considerate of you to include that.

I was told many years ago that the gov. reads all emails sent in the USA. I started using a phrase in my emails when I heard that bit of info.
I am still waiting for the Secret Service to show up at my door. wait a minute someone is knocking
