Hi I just bought a 86 maxim 700. The motor is out of the bike. I used to work for a Ducati Dealership and one of the mods we did was lighten the flywheel so the motor spins up quicker. It was an inexpensive way to get a little more umph off the line. So i was just wondering if this is something i can or should do. Thanks maxim1.jpg maxim2.jpg maxim3.jpg

You don't need to try to lighten anything so this will spool-up quicker........when you have it dialed in right, it'll go from 0 to 'holy- crap, I'm hanging on for dear life" in a just a few seconds.

You have a Maxim X there....the liquid-cooled hot rod Xj------

I'll put 2x 2-1 or 4-1 straight true and befor end a shorter muffler(that is not too loud and that not stop too much gas),thus is my opinion.

You'll get your best performance by staying with stock everything. Of course, making sure the valve clearances are correct, carbs are thoroughly cleaned, and set up correctly, air leaks are eliminated, etc......

The downside of shaving a flywheel is that the rotating mass is no longer balanced. It's not such a big deal in a 90º V-Twin, since the pistons provide near-perfect primary balance, but on an I-4 you end up with an engine that is no longer smooth.
