Looks like the bolt may have snapped and they cut a flathead slot?

Put an appropriate bit of steel in the slot to find out.
Worst case, you have to grind the head off (pelnty of us have done that) and replace it wuth a new one from Chacal (or with his spin-on filter kit).

    oh those PO's!

Welcome to the site Kagen, do like Kmoe said, get either a giant screw driver or an appropriate size piece of metal, grind it to fit tight in that slot, twist and remove and then order a new filter bolt or spin on filter kit if your budget allows from the link in the upper right hand corner- XJ4EVER.

I'm curious, is the 1.5kg-m the torque setting?

And definitely buy at least a new bolt to save you future frustration.

If your not going with spin on kit, finding a replacement bolt and case will be easy. All xj650's and 750's use the same part

Yes but most ppl did not bother with this and CRANKED it too tight. That's why Yamaha put a 12mm head on it, not a 17 or 19mm head.
Correct use is 6 point socket NOT open end wrench or pipe wrench!!!

And then you can get the correct bolt. Or the spin on filter kit.

The spin on filters do look pretty cool....

Definitely buy a new bolt. The first thing I did with my bike was strip the hell out of the original bolt trying to get it off. I managed to get it free after a few hours of torching and hammering. The next day I ordered a new bolt from Chacal. My oil changes are nice and quick now -- probably not as quick as a screw on but I don't like the look of that thing.
