After cleaning the carbs, and doing a synch when I looked at the plugs they look like I'm running lean. Dumb question but which way with the mixture screws? I'm doing this without a colortune so it's going to be adjust and run to see what they look like.

Turning them out makes it richer until you get to 4-5 turns where they are fully open and doesn't make anymore difference but this only works at idle so it won't make any difference in the looks of your plugs if you were driving at highway speeds.
Although it's the best way to adjust the idle mixture, you don't really need a colortune to adjust the screws to the approximately the correct setting because with a little practice you can adjust them by ear to where the engine runs best. If you go in too far the fuel will be cut off so the cylinder will start to miss and cut out, going out it will get faster and be fastest at the best setting then slow down again as you go out too far and it gets too rich so if you screw them in all the way, then out about 2 1/2-3 turns it will run best then slow down as you go out more, assuming the pilot jet is the right size and the tapered needle is set correctly and all the jets are clean, etc.

When I cleaned the carbs I turned them out 3 turns right off the bat. I'll prob back them out a little more then and see what happens.

Steve - using the non-colortune method - do you turn all the screws the same distance at the same time? Or is it done individually for each cylinder?

Start with all of them as close together as you can, about 3 turns, then fine tune each one for the best idle.
