I'm in the process of rebuilding a rack for a 1980 Maxim-I for a member. It came with two other racks for putting one together from the three. The best one seemed to be a midnight rack... it tore down beautifully---until carb 4 mixture screw was so seized I had to send it out for extraction. Well, the screw came out and brought half of the threads with it as they were severely eroded. The screw falls almost all the way down in. It was worth the attempt, but that body is junk now.

So onto the original rack--- it tore down easily enough, except carb 2 has a broken float tower. Well---I have a 1980 maxim-I with a super-low serial # as a resto project. So.... break THAT rack for the #2 carb. That rack is in rough shape, but the casting is good, soooo.......

Opened it up to find a very green world. Fortunately it all came apart withou much trouble until the fuel valve...
    Follow along--

The float was SO corroded I had to break it away from the pin, AND the pin was so corroded that I had to cut it just shy of the towers. LOVE my dremel cut-off wheels!

Of course, the fuel needle was seized in the bore.....

    But I got it out

Then... the first time EVER to have a fuel valve body refuse to come out. What you can't see is the tip of another easy-out that broke inside!! I had to use a big clamp to anchor the body, a bigger easy-out and a big vise-grip..... and a lot of Kroil--- and my micro- torch to heat things a bit.

It came out.... good thing--- now all of whatever THIS is can come out. I STILL have to get the float pin ends out of the towers.... obviously with out breaking a tower----
    IMG_0695.JPG

A lot of careful application of: heat, kroil, a fine point nail-set, and a good support for the tower..... and 45 more minutes of careful work------

Finally it's ready to start getting cleaned up.

    GEEZ!!!

    It's the world of Shrek.

BTW, those 1980 float bowls have removable starter circuit jets, they unscrew out of the bowl like any other, designed-for-human-beings type of jet would do, why Hitachi changed that beautiful feature is beyond me.............but then again, most things are.
