Let me start by saying I have a 82 xj650 maxim. I pulled the motor, piston heads and rings. I honed the cylinders, lapped the valves, replaced the piston heads and rings as well as all the studs that hold the engine together. When setting the timing i made sure to rotate the engine counter clock wise to tdc and i lines the dots up with the arrows on the cam covers. At that point I rotated to the "c" and then replaced the spring back into the automatic tensioner and tightened the spring retaining bolt down. As far as I know that's all there is to it. I sent my carbs out to be rebuilt as well as rejetted as I have replaced the exhaust with Mac 4 into 2 turnouts as well as filter pods. The engine won't start without starting fluid however once it does start then the start fluid is no longer needed. However now when I do start it it just revs high and I have to kill the motor. Any help with this? Carb boots are fairly new.

I had this same problem after rebuilding my bike and engine also, including the starting fluid and the high idle. I just recently pulled the carbs off and went through them again. Making sure to clean the starter jet that is in the bowl. Then it started without any starter fluid and idled fine. There will be others that come along that will tell you that no-one else will do as good of a job as yourself and I agree. The guys on here are very knowledgeable.

Did you go through a few revolutions to make sure things stayed in time before you buttoned it up? Did you rejet your carbs for the pods? They will sick in a lot more air than the stock set up. Were your carbs bench synched? Running synch? Pods are really tough to get running acceptably on CV carbs, they just aren't the optimal platform for them. Do you have the stock air box still? It might be easier to get the bike running with the stock configuration, then work on mods. Who did the work on the carbs? If it wasn't a member here, chances are that they weren't done right. Was the rack split? The throttle shaft seals are a common source of air leaks and you need to break the rack to get at them.

I sent them to Viragocarb.com. He did split the rack and replace the shaft seals also installing a dynojet stage 3 for the mods. He assures me that they were bench synced as well. I'm not sure how to know if the timing held or not. Given the fact that I can't run the bike for more than a couple of seconds a timing light is out of the question. I will say that once I put the motor back together I checked th valve clearances and both the intake and exhaust on 2 and 3 were tight so I changed them.

do you know what work was done to the carbs?

the well in the carb bowl is overlooked and can be hard to clean out this is the first part of the enrichment (choke) (start) circuit.

is the throttle cable and linkage working properly sometimes it hangs up.

have you backed out the idle knob on the carbs?

are you sure the choke cable and throttle cable are connected to the correct spots and not switched with each other.

    just the simple things first

Yes all cables are new and working properly. Idle knob is backed all the way out. Yes the carbs were split and seals replaced as well as cleaned in a ultrasonic cleaner.

    just the simple things first

remove one of the carb bowls and check to see if the enrichment well is clear use carb spray and wear a set of goggles or face shield

I had these carbs apart so many times before I decided to have someone else do it. I've had no luck at all.

starting fluid will make it rev high depending on how much you use but I do not think that is your problem.

is the enrichment (choke) offf when you restart if left on it will cause a high rpm 3 to 4 k rpm

it is the hole in the top side of the carb bowl that the brass rod slips into and leads to the hole on the boss on the inside wall of the carb bowl

    enwell.JPG
the hole to the right of the left screw holecircled in red it goes to a hole in the side of the bowl

He is building me a fresh set of carbs and sending them to me to try and rule out a carb issue. Is there anything in the motor that would effect this?

did you cap off the brass ports in the carb to manifold boots? (air leak)
    loose boots (air leak)

carb throttle linkage hung up on head.

the haynes manual shows the wrong location of the air jets under the diaphram

is there a little slack in the throttle cable? should be.

    nice setup. who's forward controls?

I did not see any thing on the wet set of the carbs. did he set the fuel levels?
if they areto high you could be flowing gas into the carbs which would explain the starting fluid and high revs

    Other things:

    Float levels?

    Mixture screws?

The rest of the enrichment circuit?

If your idle screw is backed all the way off, that'll be an issue....

How many times have we seen jets installed backward or otherwise mixed up---
