I've begun to really enjoy my old XJ since i've brought it back to life, but i can't help thinking that in a couple years i may want to upgrade. Newer and/or bigger.
If you guys would buy a newer bike, what do you think it would be? Would you stay loyal to Yamaha, switch to a Honda or other brand, or even splurge for a Harley-Davidson? Perhaps even spoil your curiosity and buy a sport bike?

I bought a Vulcan 800B before I got my Seca750. I love the v twin cruiser but I missed an inline 4. Right now I would have a hard time giving up either bike

I've been dreaming of the Victory Hammers as of late. Just wish the wife / wallet agreed.

    In reality?
Second on a late-80's Venture Royale -- perfect mix of power, capability, and comfort 20 years ahead of it's time. They've now got the FJR, but I still like the old Venture's...

    In my dreams?
I'd have to go with a Moto Guzzi Norge -- nothing like having a V-twin that's so anti-Harley they even mount the engine sideways! Puurrrrrrr......

If I ever get enough coin in the bank, and if I could find as good a deal on an older V-Star as I got on my Maxim, I might go for it. I'd probably keep the Maxim though.

I'd grab a V-Max in a hurry. Plenty of grunt and not to shabby in the leg department either.
Otherwise, I'd want my 86 Venture back.

As long as it's belt or shaft driven, and not a Kawasaki. Fuel injection would be a bonus. Street or cruiser frame -- sportbikes are right out. I don't see how anybody can ride those blasted things.

    You want a Hondabago? ;)

I'd love a new XJR 1300. Unfortunately they are Europe only. I like the Suzuki Bandit series and the Kawasaki ZRX line of bikes.

Right now a new Kawasaki 900 tickles my fancy. Although since it is a V-twin I don't consider it an upgrade. A new XJR 1300 would be an upgrade but like RangerG said, only for those in Europe. I would just like a new bike I can jump on and go, without all the worry that comes with a 24 year old bike. Even the Nomad would be nice since I like long trips. I am also curious as to why Schmuckaholic doesn't like Kawa's?

    I'd jump at an FJR, a Vmax, a Maxim X, or a Honda V45.

Re: What would you upgrade to from the XJ, if you decided to

I'd just go bigger with the same classic style as the XJ.

Whoops, I already did that with my XS1100's

But, if I had bucks to throw away it would be one of three.

    Buell,
    XJR1300,
    FJR1300

Not much else floats for me.

Maybe a HD for days I feel like fixing something.

Re: What would you upgrade to from the XJ, if you decided to

Pffft. I WISH my XJ was as reliable as my Harley. I love my 1200 Custom. I like the torque and position and overall feel of the bike. It's as solid as a rock. It's my poor man's version of a muscle car. Lots of grunt. I get my REAL speed rush in the dirt. Don't need it on the road.

I wish I could have at least one of everything. I'll probably stick with cruiser type bikes, but I really love those Kawasaki ZX12's. Classic "standard" styling. Oh yeah, and the V-Max. Oh, and the Star line of bikes...or a Warrior...or....a 'Busa, yeah that'd be sweet...or....one of the new KTM 450's that are street legal.

    See what I mean? It's a sickness.

Hook line and sinker. I knew there would be one out there to take the bait.

Think I just got spooled.

    Just kidding.

Nothing wrong with the HD, Plenty of torque, just not enough revs to follow through.

I would love to see my XJ become an XJ Diesel. I mean, while I'm dreaming, might as well dream big.

On a smaller and no less impossible level, I miss my '93 ZX6. It was all balls, and with my soft saddle bags and corbin air seat, I could travel all day and almost sleep on it. Not advised, but it was that smooth. I just needed a tent big enough to park it in to heat the space up.

The Kaw Mean Streaks are very attractive also, but then so would be a V-Star Classic from the early 90s.
