82 XJ650 Maxim fuel in exhaust

My 82 XJ650 Maxim is dumping fuel into the left side exhaust, so I am only getting about 10 MPG. Is this a float problem or a jet problem? I cleaned the carbs when I bought the bike, but haven't had the chance to tear them down again. I am not sure which is the issue, and before I spend too much time, would like to where to focus. Otherwise, I gotta think about selling.

I'm gonna take a very amature guess an ask, Did you replace your fuel inlet valves and set your wet float levels when you cleaned your carbs? Did you take the carbs to church, or just once over them?

If it were me, I'd assume my floats were sticking or failed.

 

You have a sticking float and you need to take carbs to Church.... Spray carb cleaner will not get into all the passages. You need to do a FULL tear down ..SOAK in carb cleaner ( I recommend Berrymans 1 gallon) when you soak it destroys any rubber seals so this is why full tear down is needed. With the wonderful Ethanol it gums up the small passages . You need to contact XJ4EVER on upper right corner of page . Len has all the parts needed . PLEASE note the kits on eBay do not have the butterfly seals two item I personally recommend . Len sells the brass tipped needle and seat , I feel these are better than the rubber tipped . The other item he sells is the allen head float bowl drain screws ( not cheap 40$ for 4 ) but well worth it no stripped screw head and cool factor.

 

I was going to say it sounds like you have a left side exhaust problem . . . .

I'm going with Rueben and Jet (close to Benny and the Jets) - you have a carb issue - if you did NOT go to Church - then they ain't clean/ nor refurbished proper. Add to that - if you did not get replacement parts from XJ4Ever you are potentially facing other issues.

Thanks guys, I suspected the floats. I went over them, but did not do a full wet set, or replace any parts. I will price out the cost of doing a full teardown and then make a decision. I have already spent quite a bit overhauling the entire brake system.
