So my XJ750 maxim didnt come with a speedo or tach. So I ordered one from a 650 since i like the way they look and figured they shouldnt be too bad to wire up. I know that my bikes tach is electronic and the tach i have from the 650 is manual and im not too horribly wortied about that. What I do want to work is the speedometer, the speedo lighting, and thr 4 little lights in the center of the cluster. Has anyone ever done this conversion before? Because i am having a hard time attempting to match these together especially since the connectors are different. Thanks in advance.

My bike is a 82 XJ750. And it came from an XJ650 I believe.

I looked at one of your earlier post and it looks like you have an 82, which means it was equipped with the CMS monitoring system. So, first off you would need to modify the harness for the Head Light, Brake Light, and Tail Light if you get rid of the CMS. Info on that can be found here:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threa...he-rectangular-instruments.21580/#post-182816

There should be a larger 6 terminal pin connector not shown in your picture, maybe someone already did the mod?

The rest of the lighting should be easy to match up on paper for the indicators, however it could get fairly involved in respect to finding the connectors that would match the existing harness. I guess if I were doing it, I would try to leave the main harness intact, and modify the gauges to plug into the existing harness. That would not be too hard if the gauge pins are the right configuration to do so. If they are you could get the matching harness mating connectors and place the pins into the appropriate spots.

    Some considerations:

The oil level sender is a normally closed switch on CMS bikes, so that would have to be changed for the oil light to work
Additional wires would be needed to have the oil light come on with the start button, this works in conjunction with the diode block, but I believe there is a spare diode and resistor in your existing block
You go from two turn signal indicators to one, so that wiring would be configured to accommodate for that

Here is a pic of my headlight harness and then a bunch of other nonsense that came this way when i got it. Ya, its a total mess and I have no clue what half of this crap is. Some of it i can figure out from the wiring schematic but the rest is so jacked up.

Ya, I am not horribly worried abkut the oil light, although it would be nice. And im sure the tachometer will not work either, as long as i can get my speedo, speedo lights, turn signal indicator, and neutral indicator working, ill be happy. Lol

Yea, looks like someone did a mod for the headlight bypassing the CMS system so hopefully your headlight, brake light, and tail light are good to go with that.

That small connector is for the turn and high beam indicator bulbs, the neutral indicator and gauge lights will be on one of the smaller 3 pin connectors.

How about a picture of the harness for the new gauges you are using?

It was one of the first pictures i posted with the gauges. It has 2 smaller connectors and one bigger one with 9 wires. Ya, just as long as I can find the tail light/brake light wires coming out of the back end. All I can see back there is 2 sets of 2 wires going through the left and right side, I'm imagining the old owner routed those for the rear turn signals. Me and the wiring diagram are about to get real personal. The issue is that I think the previous owner used different colored wires and whatnot.

Also, what are the 2 separate wires coming out of the headlight connector for? I dont see them on the wiring diagram.

The speedy and tach assembly from the 82-83 xj650 maxim is the same for the 83 750 maxim only.... the 82 750 maxim was different

I looked again, I believe that is a picture of the main harness with the 9 pin connector. I was interested in what kind of connectors your replacement gauges have to see if the pins could be extracted, placed in another connector, and then mated to the original harness. Otherwise, you may have to add a bunch of bullet connectors or hard splices to connect them.

I have asked that question also, but have not received an answer. They are not present on the Seca, but are on the Maxim and Turbo. There should actually be three, one for each terminal.

No, those 3 that I am holding in my hand are all coming from my speedo/tach. The 9 pin connector has a sky blue wire coming from it so I plan on connecting that to my sky blue wire (Neutral indicator light) and seeing if that is the correct one. As you can tell i have a giant mess on my hands that I will need to clean up and hide good. Plus I'm using LEDs for my tail/brake light, turn signals, and license plate light. I have an LED flasher already, just gotta locate that on my bike and swap that out.

Sky blue on the Yamaha harness is for the neutral switch.

The turn signal relay is under the fuel tank.

My bad, the 9 pin connector looks just like the original on the main harness and the corresponding Atari cluster connector that mates with it has male pins. The good part is that the indicator lights appear to have matching connectors that will mate, so some of those could be pinned to work without doing splices.

Does this match your gauges as for wire color?

Good deal, now just match the wires from the 750 to 650 and your good to go. As for the method of connecting them hopefully you can extract some pins and use some of those connectors to keep it neat.
