Carb rebuild on an 82 xj650

    If I were to buy everything I'd need to replace the internal parts on the Hitachi 32 carb (including the parts needed for a full break down) how much would that cost? The catalog is super confusing for me.

    The catalog is a little overwhelming at first. Takes a little to get used to it. Are your carbs in that bad of shape to where everything must be thrown away and replaced? If you have everything apart, take some photos and we can see what you're working work. A good place to start with rebuilding carbs are:
    1. float bowl gaskets
    2. throttle shaft seals
    3. fuel o-ring gaskets

    other than that, I think everything else should (hopefully) be salvageable. Get some carb cleaner and carb dip and clean the parts the best you can. I let each fully dissembled carb soak for about 2 hours in Berryman Chem-Dip before cleaning off in water and giving them a good scrub before putting them back together. I'd then inspect all the jets before putting them back in and then ordered only the parts I needed.

    All of my jets were pretty much fused into the carb body so they look pretty rough. I know of my main fuel jet needles is mushroomed on the bottom. Everything in that carb is in pretty bad shape because the P.O. was a dumby

NOTE: these kits contain ten (10) of the fuel supply/overflow tube o-rings, which is enough to accommodate the HSC33 series carbs; owners of the HSC32 series carbs will find that they have 4 extra o-rings leftover, as those carbs only require 6 of those o-rings for the fuel supply tubes. Also included are eight (8) of the throttle shaft plastic shim washers, which will leave you with one extra shim (HSC32 carbs) or three extra shims (HSC33 carbs).     there are parts you may or maynot need depending on the condition of your parts
    like throttle shaft plastic shim washers, and the clips for them
    mixture screw springs if yours are good
    the standard kit is a few bucks cheeper

    Think of it this way would your bike want to go supper cheap if you needed a new heart ?Buy the best cry once. The carbs done right the first time shoul give you countless hours of riding. Taking short cuts and not following advise leads to countless hours of frustration . These carbs are not real hard to rebuild and tune if done right and yes it will ivolve some $$$$ resist the temptation to order kits off of ebay ... they do not come with all the seals and O rings. Keep us informed of your progress.

    In all honesty I'm thinking of getting out from under the bike, I'm going to be spending more on the bike to get it up and running than what its worth. I'm already $600 deep onto it between thr cost of thr bike, licensing and the such that if I have to drop another $400 just in carb parts is going to put me over $1000. I'm pretty frustrated and I dont knoe if I want to continue to try and fix it. Still needs tired for sure.

    Resale value should not be a consideration if you originally bought the bike to ride.
    Any halfway decent, road-ready (as in no work needing to be done in the immediate future) motorcycle is going to set you back at least $3500.
    Your XJ isn't going to cost you much more than $1500 (tags, and associated fees excluded, since those will be about the same no matter what motorcycle you ride) .

    So if you have 1500 to 1800$ tied up ride it a couple of seasons then it is still cheaper than buying a new bike agree with Kmoe if you do not want to work on the bike , you'll spend 2500 to 3500$ for a used bike from most stealer ships. I bought my Seca for 850$ I replaced both tires, brake hoses with braided steel, rebuilt forks, brakes pads/shoes, AMG battery . Spin on oil filter conversion, rebuilt carbs fully replaced all hardware with stainless allen screws. Still have about 1800$ More I want to do because I really love this bike .
