    I'm looking to buy a gas tank and side covers from a 1980 maxim 400 and wondering if they would fir my 85' xj700 maxim. If you know please let me know.

    Well - I'm only 90% sure here, but I'd say not a chance -- wayyyyy too different bikes.

    Similar question. I have a XJ550, how much higher up the tree can I go to get a bigger tank (more gas) and not have to modify anything?

    I tried the 400 gas tank on my XJ700 and I can tell you "don't waste your time." The center of the gas tank is too thin for the frame of the XJ700. You would have to modify the tank to make it sit on the frame all the way.
