    Hi all,

    I've searched, but haven't found this information, so I apologize in advance for wasting anyone's time.

    I need new air and oil filters for my '82 Maxim 550; are these "specialty" items, or are they perhaps available as an interchange at a regular auto parts store? i.e. Are there commonly available filters that will fit the XJ550?

    Thanks - Mike

    1982 XJ550 Maxim, 18,000 Mi, stock, undergoing carb clean and tank de-rusting

    I just buy mine at the local mom and pop bike shop. He usually has both in stock. The local Yamaha dealer doesn't usually stock them, but will order them for me. You can also try the various on-line motorcycle supply vendors, or even the for sale section on this site. There is a member here by the name of Chacal that sells all manner of stuff for our bikes.

    Mike you could add your location in your acct settings, b/c you could be in Russia for all we know.
    The filters may/or maynot be avalible at local auto stores depending on your location.

    While your at it, add yourself to the XJ Bikes map
    http://www.xjbikes.com/dfmaps.html
    And also add your bike's info as your signature

    Welcome to the board, and be CAREFUL removing the oil filter bolt. Those have been known to be problematic. Once your done, coat her up with some AntiSeize lube

    And here they are:

    AIR FILTER ELEMENTS:

    af1) OEM and aftermarket stock PLEATED PAPER AIR FILTER ELEMENT. Original factory and reproduction air filter elements lets your engine breathe all the good, clean air it deserves. Dirty, oil or fuel soaked elements dramatically reduce the flow of air into the engine, thus resulting in a very rich fuel mixture to the carbs. Aftermarket stock type elements look, fit, and perform just like the factory filters, although some versions may have molded plastic end cases rather than the thin stamped sheetmetal caps as on OEM filters.

    HCP689 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ550 models.
    $ 33.00

    HCP1218 Aftermarket pleated-paper stock style Air Filter Element, fits all XJ550 models.
    $ 15.00

    HCP690 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ650 (except Turbo) and all XJ750 models.
    $ 31.00

    HCP1219 Aftermarket pleated-paper stock style Air Filter Element, fits all XJ650 (except Turbo) and all XJ750 models.
    $ 14.00

    HCP691 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ650 Turbo models.
    $ 34.00

    HCP692 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ700 models.
    $ 37.00

    HCP693 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ900 models.
    $ 26.00

    HCP1222 Aftermarket pleated-paper stock style Air Filter Element, fits all XJ900 models.
    $ 15.00

    HCP694 OEM pleated-paper stock Air Filter Element, fits all XJ1100 models.
    $ 34.00

    af2) Aftermarket K&N high-flow, re-usable HIGH-PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER ELEMENT. Made from 4-6 layers of a tough cotton gauze material bonded between aluminum retainer screens, K&N air filters flow more air than stock pleated paper filters, and can be cleaned, re-oiled, and re-used almost indefinitely, while also fitting inside your stock airbox. Each filter contains two 15ml tubes of filter oil and cleaning/re-oiling instructions. Large 6-ounce spray cans of re-oil fluid and 32-ounce bottles of cleaner are also available below. You normally DO have to re-jet your carbs when replacing a stock paper element with a K&N filter, but individual situations will vary. Always check your plug insulator colors after installing any intake or exhaust modifications to insure proper mixture conditions and settings!

    HCP1212 K&N high-flow Air Filter Element, for all XJ550 models:
    $ 43.00

    NOTE: on the following two K&N filters----for the XJ650 (except Turbo) and XJ750 models---we offer two different size K&N filters:

    a) the "standard" K&N filter designated for these models, part HCP1213. This filter is tiny compared to the size of the stock Yamaha paper filter element and airbox for these models....about 40% of the original size, at most. We're not really sure why K&N specifies such a small filter for these models, but they do!

    b) an "oem-sized" Super K&N filter, part HCP6478. This is actually a larger K&N filter (which is the same size and shape as the stock Yamaha paper filter) that has been modified to properly fit into the stock 650/750 airbox. This filter will give you the absolute maximum airflow possible while still using a stock filtered airbox intake system.

    HCP1213 K&N high-flow Air Filter Element, for all XJ650 (except Turbo) and all 1981-83 XJ750 models, small size.
    $ 40.00

    HCP6478 K&N super-high-flow Air Filter Element, for all XJ650 (except Turbo) and all 1981-83 XJ750 models, oem size.
    $ 57.00

    HCP5786 K&N high-flow Air Filter Element, for all 1985-86 XJ700 and XJ750-X models:
    $ 40.00

    HCP5740 K&N high-flow Air Filter Element, for all 1983 XJ900RK Seca models:
    $ 42.00

    HCP1726 K&N air filter Cleaner Solution, large 32-oz. trigger spray bottle.
    $ 17.00

    HCP1727 K&N air filter Re-Oiling Oil, large 6-oz. spray can.
    $ 12.50

    af2) Aftermarket UNI re-usable FOAM AIR FILTER ELEMENT. Made from an open-cell polyurethane foam material, these filters flow more air than stock pleated paper filters, can be cleaned, re-oiled, and re-used almost indefinitely, and fit inside your stock airbox. As contrasted with K&N filters, you normally will NOT have to re-jet your carbs when replacing a stock paper element with a UNI foam filter, but individual situations will vary. Always check your plug insulator colors after installing any intake or exhaust modifications to insure proper mixture conditions and settings!

    HCP6474 UNI high-flow foam Air Filter Element, for all XJ550 models:
    $ 27.00

    HCP6475 UNI high-flow foam Air Filter Element, for all XJ650 (except Turbo) and all 1981-83 XJ750 model:
    $ 27.00

    HCP6476 UNI high-flow Air Filter Element, for all 1985-86 XJ700 and XJ750-X models:
    $ 27.00

    OILING SYSTEM PARTS:

    os1) Reproduction Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit....okay, the original Yamaha cartridge oil filter system is "adequate", but for real oil filtering capabilities and ease of filter replacement---not to mention a certain cool-factor!---you really want to upgrade the factory system to an automotive-type spin-on "can" filter. Doing so not only gets you better oil filtration, easier (much easier) oil changes, but also eliminates the oil cleaner cover, the easy-to-strip by-pass bolt, and all the other associated o-rings and seals needed when performing an oil change using a stock system.

    This system consists of six pieces:

    a) a precision-machined aluminum filter Adapter Plate and mounting Nut.
    b) a threaded mounting Stud and a corresponding stud installation Tool.
    c) a plate-to-block O-ring Seal.
    d) your choice of a Purolator, K&N, or Amsoil spin-on mini-can oil filter.
    e) installation instructions.

    This kit contains everything you'll need to replace your original set-up on any XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, or XJ900RK models. NOTE: will work on both all original non-oil-cooler equipped models, as well as on all factory oil-cooler-equipped models (XJ650 Turbo and XJ900RK), without the use of any additional parts.

    The Adapter Plate in this spin-on filter kit replaces the entire outer filter cover (and all its mounting and internal pieces) on all models, and is only about 1" longer in overall length than the stock filter system---so clearance against the frame rails and exhaust headpipes is not an issue. All of the can filters that we offer are approximately 2-3/4" in diameter, and should "fit" easily in-between the two central exhaust header pipes on a stock exhaust system (you may wish to verify clearance on your own bike).

    Additionally, all of the can filters that we offer measure only about 2-3/4" in diameter, which means you should NOT have any problems with accessing them via through the clearance in-between the #2 and #3 exhaust header pipes on stock system. Aftermarket systems MAY pose some challenges in this regard, and due to the variety of different systems on the market, you should measure your system to determine the ease of access.

    HCP1284PL aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit, with a Purolator Pure-One mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 54.95

    HCP1284KN aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit, with a K&N mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 59.95

    HCP1284AM aftermarket Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter Kit, with an Amsoil mini-can filter. Each:
    $ 64.95

    Periodic replacement parts (the only ones you'll ever need) for either kit above:

    HCP277 replacement Purolator One spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. This gold Purolator can filter is an excellent choice that balances low-cost with good filtration ability, and it has a coarse-texture finish on the can to make the installation and removal simpler. Each:
    $ 7.95

    HCP278 replacement K&N spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. This K&N filter features a high-flow rate with excellent filtration ability. Additionally, this filter has a welded-on hex-nut on the top to aid in installation and, especially, removal. Each:
    $ 12.95

    HCP2798 replacement Amsoil spin-on mini-can Oil Filter. Amsoil ultra-high-performance filters are recognized as the "gold standard" in oil filtration, showing both an extremely high-flow rate with exceptional filtration ability. Each:
    $ 19.95

    HCP2283 spin-on oil filter adapter plate-to-block O-Ring Seal, for the HCP1284PL, HCP1284KN, or HCP1284AM adapter plate kits. Each:
    $ 3.50

    Original Yamaha Oil Filtration System Parts:

    NOTE: on paper oil filter elements, the "flat" face of the filter element faces TOWARDS the engine, and the "concave" face of the filter element goes towards the filter housing cover. Sitting within both openings of the oil filter element are the HCP281 grommets. On the "concave" side of the filter, then comes the HCP1493 flat washer, followed by the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression spring, and finally then the outer cover.

    m7) OEM Paper Element Oil Filters, original Yamaha supplier. Does NOT include the HCP281 filter grommets or any of the o-rings.

    HCP695 OEM Yamaha Oil Filter Element fits XJ550/650/700/750/900:
    $ 7.50

    HCP697 OEM Yamaha Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.50

    n7) Aftermarket FRAM Paper Element Oil Filters. Include the HCP281 filter grommets, housing o-ring, and bypass bolt o-ring.

    HCP1650 FRAM Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ550/650/700/750/900:
    $ 7.00

    HCP1651 FRAM Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.95

    COMMENTARY: many people have read reviews or seen comments to the effect that "Fram oil filters are junk, etc.". While this claim may or may not be true in regards to their automotive line of can filters, this may not apply to their motorcylce line of filters (which I've used for years on my bikes). There is really nothing in the world that could be simpler than a motorcylce filter for these Yamaha's. If it is a concern to you, then of course order an OEM filter or the K&N filter, they're all so cheap that it hardly makes an economic difference one way or the other, but just thought you'd like to know!

    p7) Aftermarket K&N Performance Gold Synthetic Element Oil Filters. Includes the HCP281 filter element grommets, but no housing or bypass bolt o-rings.

    HCP1652 K&N Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ550/650/700/750/900:
    $ 6.00

    HCP1653 K&N Paper Oil Filter Element fits XJ1100:
    $ 7.95

    q7) OEM Yamaha oil filter element rubber GROMMET, use 2 per filter, fits onto both sides of the filter element.

    HCP281 OEM oil filter element Grommet, fits XJ550/650/700/750/900 models, each:
    $ 3.00 each

    HCP281SET2 OEM oil filter element Grommet, fits XJ550/650/700/750/900 models, set of two grommets:
    $ 5.50

    q20b) OEM Yamaha oil filter element PLATE WASHER, use 1 per filter, used only on the "concave" face of the filter element. This washer serves as a "seat" for the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression springs listed below.

    HCP1493 OEM oil filter element Plate Washer/Spring Seat, fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900/1100 models, each:
    $ 1.50

    q21b) OEM Yamaha oil filter element COMPRESSION SPRING, use 1 per filter, not a bad idea to replace these every once in a while (perhaps after every 5th oil change).

    HCP1494 OEM oil filter element Compression Spring, fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900 models, each:
    $ 2.75

    HCP1495 OEM oil filter element Grommet, fits XJ1100 models, each:
    $ 2.50

    r7) OEM O-RING for oil filter housing-to-block.....the big round one on the filter housing and on the adapter plate (for factory oil-cooler equipped models). Correct sized oil- and heat-resistant ring perfectly replaces the original. Not a bad idea to replace these once a year.........

    HCP1488 OEM oil filter housing O-Ring, for XJ550/650/700/750/900 models:
    $ 4.50

    HCP282 OEM oil filter housing O-Ring, for XJ1100 models:
    $ 6.25

    bb) Aftermarket O-Ring for oil filter housing-to-block.....the big round one on the filter housing and on the adapter plate (for factory oil-cooler equipped models). Correct sized oil- and heat-resistant ring perfectly replaces the original. Not a bad idea to replace these once a year.........

    HCP2283 oil filter housing O-Ring, for XJ550/650/700/750/900 models:
    $ 3.50

    dd) OEM and aftermarket Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve/Cover Mounting BOLT .....the bolt that holds the oil filter cover housing to the block (for standard AND factory oil-cooler equipped models). OEM and aftermarket reproduction versions of this machined steel bolt and oil pressure by-pass assembly correctly replace the original bolt. Comes with the o-ring. Aftermarket version has a much larger 17mm hex head rather than the small factory 12mm hex head---so you won't strip it off as easily as is the case with a frozen stock bolt. Not a bad idea to replace these once in a while.........

    PLEASE!: always use anti-seize compound on the threads when installing this bolt!

    HCP1067 OEM Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve & Cover Mounting Bolt, bright finish, small 12mm head, fits all 550/650/700/750/900 models. NOTE: All Midnight Maxim and XJ900RK models used this bolt, but it had a black finish on the head. Each:

    $ 12.95

    HCP1486 OEM Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve & Cover Mounting Bolt, bright finish, fits all 1100 models. Each:
    $ 27.95

    HCP271 Aftermarket Oil Filter Pressure By-pass Valve & Cover Mounting Bolt, bright plated finish, 12mm head, fits all XJ1100 models. Each:
    $ 12.95

    cc) O-RING for oil filter by-pass valve/cover mounting bolt.....fits the bolt that holds the oil filter housing to the block (for standard AND factory oil-cooler equipped models). Correct sized oil- and heat-resistant o-ring perfectly replaces the original. Not a bad idea to replace these once a year.........

    HCP1496 OEM oil filter bolt O-Ring, fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900 models, each:
    $ 2.00

    HCP2279 aftermarket oil filter bolt O-Ring, fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900 models, each:
    $ 1.50

    Paper filters retain the correct stock airflow characteristics, and thus don't require carb re-jetting.

    All foam filters flow more than the stock paper elements, and thus MAY require carb re-jetting to prevent a lean condition.

    K&N "foam" filters flow better than UNI foam filters.

    The "foam" filters are washable, re-oilable, and therefore re-usable almost indefinetly. Paper filters, when they get dirty, need to be replaced.
