Guys I could use some help here. Dave was nice enough to talk to me last week and now that I'm down to business on this upgrade, I'm stuck. I cannot remove the steering stem lock nut. I've been hammering hard with a flat head screwdriver and hammer to get it loose to no avail. There is no steering lock washer tab between the steering stem lock nut and the steering adjusting nut. Should there be? This is my 650 maxim.
I don't have a spanner wrench and called Autozone to see if they could loan one. Unfortunately that was not an option.

The locknut is actually two thin nuts. You'll need to be careful to only use your drift on the upper of the two, otherwise you're just locking them tighter against the stem threads.

At this point you may need a helper and two drifts so you can knock the jamnuts in separate directions.

I only see two big nuts. Gawd that sounds perverted.. haha
Anyhow, there's the steering bearing locknut and the steering bearing adjusting nut. Each of these are maybe an 1/8" thick, and yes I'm only beating on the top one with a flat head screwdriver and hammer, tangent to the nut. But you're saying the top locknut is actually two thin nuts, therefore there are three total nuts on top of the bearing seal?

No. There are only two. 1/8" is thin for nuts of that diameter, which is the whole point with jamnuts. There is no locking washer. The upper nut jams against the lower one to lock both in place.

I'm assuming that you've already removed the crown bolt and the top triple clamp.

Have you tried soaking it with penetrating oil? It could very well be that they have corroded to the stem.

Are you using a deadblow hammer?
