Long story short my gas tank ('82 XJ650 Maxim factory steel tank) got a dent in it (nothing serious just a small cosmetic thing) and I noticed the tank itself isn't painted, it's raw steel with a plastic kind of shell around it, and that plastic got a crack in it. Just want to make sure its ok to glue/epoxy the cracked area so moisture does not get in, is there a specific epoxy like JB Weld or something I should use?

Is this really the layer of paint? It seems way too thick and durable to be just paint/powder coat? But the tank should be original and that stuff is around the steel tank, the tank itself is not cracked, there is steel underneath the painted layer

Yes. That is paint. That is what enamel does (sometimes) when it is in really good condition, and subjected to a sharp ding that deforms the steel below. Powder-coat has the same color all the way through. What you have in your hand is several layers of primer, followed by even more layers of color. Yamaha didn't skimp.

Holy hell that is some thick paint... So I assume gluing the flap down and sealing up the crack is a good idea so moisture won't get underneath and rust the tank?

Repairing the dent is going to require removing that part of the paint anyway (even if it hadn't cracked), then repainting the area and blending it in to match the old paint.

Is it really an issue if I repair the cracked area with epoxy and leave it as is? Bike isn't in mint condition anyway and the dent isn't huge, really doesn't matter to me the tank has a little dent in it

I epoxied a flap like that down on a '95 Honda Accord. Worked, but you could still see the crack of course. You just want to get a thin film all over so it completely seals from moisture, but doesn't ooze out and look worse.

The epoxy fix glue lasted 14 years - car is still in use.

Ya, you can do that if you have no intention of repaiing the dent.
