Best place I know is the dealer. Ours will supply a set of 4 for around $100, new with gaskets. Just be careful taking them out - mine has frozen cap screws. They are notoriously weak according to the guys on this forum and could be costly if broken off. Check my post on the topic:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=5767.html

    Good luck with your manifolds.

Try ebay. Search under yamaha xj650 parts. salvage guys sell random collections of parts and sometimes
intake boots are part of the batch. Do a thorough search and you might turn some up.

    SO DOES XJ4EVER

When you're all done farting around with your cheaper set, get sent the wrong parts, find out they don't fit, send them back, and go through it all over again.... Just to find out they are junk-----

Just get them from Len, and be riding again.

We no longer offer the reproduction intake manifolds for the XJ650/XJ750 models as we've had too many significant failures with them. They all come from one source (there is only ONE manufacturer of these particular reproduction/aftermarket manifolds) and every one of them that you see being offered for sale.....whether on individual websites, shops, eBay, Amazon, etc. ALL come from that one source, and ALL of them have quality issues (they are simply not made properly),

We still have the OEM manifolds available.....they are much more expensive than the repro manifolds....but they'll last 20+ years just like the originals did. With these particular repro manifolds, you might only get 20 DAYS use out of them..........

BTW, the above applies ONLY to the XJ60/XJ750 intake manifolds. The aftermarket/reproduction XJ550 and XJ1100 intake manifolds are an oem-equivalent quality product.

This WHY we need to order from xj4ever....he only sells the best and will stand by his product.. Some ebay sellers are honest, some not so much. my motto Buy the best cry once... better than spending $$ and have to keep spending money to get part that might work or not. Thanks Chacal

Wow, thanks for all the replies guys! I think I will end up ordering some new ones over the winter. A guy at a local shop showed me how to "patch" them with some black magic and an inner tube. I was going to try that for now but it looks like I'm going to have to change some piston rings too...looks like a bigger parts list/budget is in order.

While we are on the subject, my boots are in good shape , but they wont be for much longer if I dont find a way to get those SOB's back in their spots. Been farting with just the first one for hours with no luck and getting close to tearing it by prying. I would like someone to give me the secret or at least tricks and tips on installing box -to-carb rubber boots after the air box and carbs are already on ? Anyone, Any help ?

K-Moe beat me to the "Post Reply" button! Ha Ha... Heat! Warm them up and they will soften and be more "bendy" and pliable. Though most of the North East is pretty warm right now maybe it's cool in your garage??? Also, put a light coat of silicone grease on the outer lip of each carb neck if need be. It will help the boots to slip on. DO not use vaseline as it is petroleum based and will eat your rubber. Also Make sure your air box is not screwed tightly in place. Let it "float."

Nope. You have a non-YICS engine. Only two of the intake boots from the 750 will fit.

Why don't whoever makes the XJ550 and XJ1100 aftermarket ones make some XJ650 ones? If they know how and are making quality products for some, can't they make quality products for the other models? Or is there something really special about the XJ650 ones that are hard to duplicate?

Unfortunately the reproductions of the 650 (and the 750) intake boots have had a few inexcusable (my opinion) failures, which is why Chacal no longer carries them. You can roll the dice on a set if you like; they're on Ebay all-day-long.

The set I bought (prior to the failures becoming evident) are still working well, but will be replacing them with OEM if they do fail.
I think the trouble is not a matter of being difficult to make correctly, but being difficult to make correctly and still cost less than the OEM boots.

A few years ago (like 5?) there were no options for new intake boots from anyone. New Old Stock was as good as it got. As demand increases (and it will) more quality options will become available.

Fortunately, I don't need any but it just seems odd that the reproductions for some models are good quality and other models aren't. I was just wondering out loud.

It's a long story..........maybe someday there will be a happy ending. K-moe has hit the nail on the head, with increased demand will hopefully bring more options.
