X stands for Standard motorcycle (as opposed to an offroad bike, which was Y or sportbike, which was F)

S is for the upright twin engine, or possibly single overhead cam.

Other Yamaha bikes follow this convention as well. XJ is a Standard with an upright inline four (J engine). FJ is a Sport with an upright inline four. Virago is an XV, Standard with a V-Twin.

sounds good but I got it from the internet:rolleyes: where all things are true:eek:

I posted this on the internet. Does that make it true? If so, I'll make it official: Cats are better than dogs! 40 is the new 28! Bacon bras are the latest trend sweeping the nation! Ladies wear BBQ sauce as the best perfume! Matti is a guru, everyone send him one dollar!

S is a weird one. Yamaha was inconsistent in applying that designation. There is the XS650 parallel twin, the XS750 and 850 triples, and the XS1100 inline four (there are others, but we got the most of these in the U.S.). All have different cam configurations. Standing for sport would be a good guess, but even that dosen't quite make the cut since the XS750/850 were both sold as touring machines.
