Finished sanding and primed tank, fender and grab bar. Changed choke cable and set clutch cable tension.

Rode the maxim to and from work, then after I got home started the removal of the dreaded pods and reinstallation of an airbox on the girlfriends maxim. It's almost all the way in there but had to stop to send the virago to its new home

I did this a while ago -- I was using my tank as the source. The set-up was less than ideal. I build a stand but in the future i'd probably invest in a fuel canister with extra long and flexible tube.

With no rain in the forecast I rode the bike to work, last year I believe I rode almost 100 days straight with no rain, this year I am lucky to get one day during the week with no rain, damn you mother nature!

Years ago I bought a universal car coolant overflow tank at a auto parts store for about $10, it came with clear tubing and the tank itself is clear making easy to see the fuel level. Added a lawn mower fuel valve and a metal coat hanger and you have a nice auxiliary fuel tank to hang on the handle bars for doing your running sync or color tuning or on the bench for checking float levels.

Replaced the headlight bulb and the speedometer cable. The needle on the speedometer kept shaking. My fault, as I hadn't been good at keeping it lubricated. I made sure the new one was sprayed with cable lube. The previous headlight had low bean only, and I didn't want to wait until it completely failed before replacing it.

I just had my headlight* fail completely (yay for second light with LED floodlamp!) Always an awesome thing to have happen on your ride home from work at 11:30 at night.

Spent this morning working on the old stock headlight to adapt it to match my bike better. Dug out the mounting ears, drilled holes to mount my signals (they look best right beside the headlight), and formed a grill as I was very attached to the grill on my Chinesium headlight. Also as it's a 35 year old bulb I busted out the toothpaste and got to work polishing the lens.

Gonna grab some paint this afternoon for the shell and grill, and install tomorrow.

The square headlight will work better with the squared Seca windshield, anyways.

    * 100% Chinesium LED headlight, cost: $20. You get what you pay for.

Got both xj's out for a little fresh air and a photo or two. The mini bike felt left out so it got to join in as well. Before the fireworks show started we parked both the xj's on the street spaced just far enough apart so nobody would park in front thus blocking our view.

To make sure that my motor would fire after a top end rebuild, I made the dodgiest wiring harness for the ignition, and fired her up using my car battery and a funnel to get the fuel into the carbs. Smelled like fuel in my whole garage, and I am pretty sure it was a big fire risk, but what do you do for the old xj's hey!

If you build a mometer with vinyl tubes, you NEED to put rubber hose on last 6-12 inches to attach to carb, or engine heat will collapse the vinyl tube causing erratic readings. Found this out the hard lesson way....

Good tip. I was looking at making one myself, and would have just used vinyl as it's what I have on hand.

What's the ID for the vacuum line? I'd like to grab some on the way home to build one of these myself.

Finished up reinstalling my newly painted and grilled stock headlight, rebuilt my speedometer (well, opened, realised it was nearly impossible to disassemble without cutting it apart, then did my best to clean/relube), made some adjustments to my windshield mounts to account for the new (old) headlight.

Took her for a test ride, and despite riding for half an hour, realized I had not in fact looked at the speedometer once so I've no idea if it works or not. But at least it wasn't howling!

Got carried away with the ride in the sun. *Shrugs* it happens, I guess :)
