82 xj650 Maxim won't do start.

So I bought a 1982 yamaha xj650 Maxim and went to my local shop to get the carbs rejetted and cleaned and such since it has pod filters. I got it back and started it up then put it in gear and it died and hasn't done anything since. Nothing will crank or anything.

 

Are you getting a neutral light?

 

It's been bobbed out so I actually don't have any of the original dash stuff.

 

Was the kickstand down when you put it into gear.......this will kill the engine......safety precaution .......

Just a bit of advice here.......work on your own bike.......bike shops will just take your money......most do not know how to work on 35+ yr old bikes......

^^^ true, as long as the side stand switch hasn't been cut out or bypassed. I especially say this since the term "bobber"

 

It could be any one of the safety switches should they still exist. Somehow you've lost power to the start circuit. Need to start testing to see where you are losing the voltage before the start button

 

Has your fuse box been upgraded or still glass fuses? The kill switch is in run position? Is your battery fully charged? All things to ponder.

 

go to your tci and unplug the black white wire it is about 4 inches long and is a bullet connector in a rubber sleeve. it will bypass the side stand switch and relay.

if your bike starts it is time to look for sidestand relay and check the sidestand switch or its wires if the side stand switch was removed

 

It's been solved. It actually was something very simple (thankfully!) It had been changed to a reverse shift (gp shift?) So what I thought was neutral was not. First gear was where the highest gear normally would be.

 

Who put the shift lever on incorrectly ?????

 

Someone that wanted to be able to shift up a gear while heeled-over in a corner.
It's not incorrect, just different.
